Chinese Blu-ray Players To Flood The Market In 2009

According to China Tech News, the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) has approved eleven Chinese firms, ncluding TCL, Malata, and Desay, to begin producing Blu-ray players and discs, starting in 2009.

While some HD DVD die hards pointed to CH-DVD as if it were some kind of phoenix in the form of which HD DVD would rise from the ashes, it looks like even those hopes have been dashed. The BDA points out that since the demise of HD DVD, Chinese manufacturers have been flocking to Blu-ray, and that while the number of members in the BDA has increased to 187, the number of members in the DVD Forum (which backs DVD and HD DVD) has decreased from 240 to 163! The BDA last fall began evaluating Chinese codecs for inclusion in the BD specification. China has made support of the codecs a requirement for any advanced format released in China, and the codecs were the main difference between HD DVD and CH-DVD. This license development could hint at progress in including those codecs to support a domestic BD release in China.

Video Business reports that high-end consumer electronics retailers expect Blu-ray players to begin outselling DVD players as early as this August, riding a wave of increased player availability and lower prices. On a dollar basis, retailer Crutchfield is already reporting that Blu-ray is outselling DVD 60:40, but that’s largely due to the higher prices on BD decks.

The current Home Media Magazine has a product guide which provides an overview and comparison of the forthcoming Blu-ray players that have been announced. It is worth checking out if you’re thinking about buying a BD deck. Personally I wouldn’t even consider a Profile 1.1/Bonus View deck at this point – stick with Profile 2.0/BD-Live – at least BD-Live Ready.

Best Buy Launches Insignia Blu-ray Deck for $349.99

Best Buy has begun selling a Blu-ray deck under their in-house Insignia brand, the Insignia NS-BRDVD. This is very likely another variant of the Funai NB500. That would mean it is Bonus View/Profile 1.1 only, no BD-Live/Profile 2.0. And the Magnavox NB500NG9, a Funai NB500 variant, sells for $298 at Wal*Mart, so that’s a better value. In fact, the Samsung BD-P1500, which is ‘BD-Live Ready’, sells for $348 at Wal*Mart, and a 40GB PS3, which is a better BD deck and a gaming system, is $399 (with a free movie and remote through today). So there really isn’t a good reason to buy one of these.

But it is still nice to see the general trend for more Blu-ray players hitting the market with lower prices.

DirecTiVo Units Receiving 6.4a

It looks like the long promised software update to the DirecTiVo boxes is finally here. Users are TiVoCommunity are reporting receiving 6.4a on their units. As announced last July, the update includes the Recently Deleted folder in the Now Playing List, Overlap Protection (clipping), and DirecTV’s Remote Booking – aka online scheduling. There are reported to be a number of cosmetic changes to the menus as well, making them resemble the current standalone boxes more closely.

Unfortunately, that seems to be it. While some were hoping the update would activate the USB ports and networking, that doesn’t seem to be the case. So the DirecTiVo units still lack many of the features of standalone TiVos.

Fun with Charter Customer Support, Part Two

I figured I should follow up on my post from Saturday, filling in the rest of the story. To recap I’d lost three HD channels on my cable – 734 AETVHD, 735 HISTORYHD, and 742 MOJOHD. I think I failed to mention last time that I’d also been experiencing some pixelation on some of my SD digital channels as well, for the past couple of weeks. It wasn’t as big of an issue since it was mostly on channels I never watch. The only one that got me was IFC, since I record Speed Grapher and Witchblade on Friday nights. But even then it seemed to only pixelate on one tuner of my S3, the other tuner worked OK and the cable box on the bedroom S2 would work OK as well. So I wasn’t sure if it was the cable or the TiVo, and I hadn’t had time to really look into it.

Since this is long, I’ll cut it.
