More Amazon Gold Box Blu-ray Specials

Adding to yesterday’s specials, Amazon is offering a few more today.

Save $300 when you buy a Sony Blu-ray player and Sony Bravia HDTV together. Buy the BDP-S350 for $224.00 or the BDP-S550 for $329.99 along with one of four Sony Bravia HDTVs, 46″ or 52″ with prices from $1,797.94 to $2,077.98 and Amazon drops $300 off the total. Both Blu-ray players are BD-Live capable, and the offer runs through November 8, 2008.

If you just need a Blu-ray player, Amazon is also selling the Samsung BD-P1500 for $206.64 - with a free copy of Incredible Hulk on Blu-ray! Buy through November 8, 2008 to get your free BD. The BD-P1500 is also a BD-Live capable player, and at that price it is a great value.

And remember, the Samsung Blu-ray Player/Home Theater Bundle and 24-month financing on select Samsung HDTVs offers that I posted yesterday are still running.

Amazon Gold Box Blu-ray Specials Today

Amazon has a couple of Blu-ray specials in their Gold Box today. First up is Kill Bill Volumes 1&2 Blu-ray Bundle. MSRP $69.98, normal Amazon price $39.99 - today only $27.95! (It figures - after meaning for months to pick this up I finally did, two weeks ago.)

And if you don’t have a Blu-ray player yet and you’re ready to move up to Blu-ray and surround sound, you can save an extra $50 on a Samsung Blu-ray Player/Home Theater Bundle. Purchase the Samsung BD-P1500 1080p BD-Live Blu-ray player for $206.64 ($299.99 MSRP) and the Samsung HT-AS720ST Blu-Ray 5.1 Channel Home Theater System (receiver and six speakers) for $460.40 ($599.99 MSRP) and Amazon will knock another $50 off. This offer runs through December 31, 2008.

And if you need an HDTV to go with that, get 24-month financing on select Samsung HDTVs. LCD, DLP, and plasma HDTVs in sizes from 40″ to 72″, and prices $1,282.37 to $3,468.70. No interest if paid in full within 24 months. This offer is good through February 24, 2009.

Buy Four Warner Blu-ray Discs And A Player, Save $100

Amazon is running another Blu-ray sale, this time you buy any four of 22 Warner Blu-ray discs along with an eligible player, and you save $100 by entering code AMAZONBD when you check out. The Blu-ray titles range in price from $16.95 to $25.95. There are three eligible players: the 80GB Sony PlayStation 3 for $399.99, the Sylvania NB500SL9 for $199.98, and the Samsung BD-P1500 for $211.73.

Personally I don’t think the Sylvania is worth consideration. It is a Profile 1.1 deck, one of the many rebadged versions of the Funai NB500. With the Profile 2.0 Samsung less than $12 more, there is no point in considering the Sylvania. So it really comes down to the PS3 vs. the BD-P1500. They’re both Profile 2.0 / BD-Live with the latest firmware. The PS3 is generally reviewed as one of the best, if not the best, BD deck available, but the Samsung is no slouch either. So if you’ll use the PS3s other features - gaming, broadband content downloads, etc, enough to justify the extra ~$200, go with that. Otherwise the Samsung is a solid choice and a good value.

According to the offer details, it is running through December 31, 2008. Though I expect they may shuffle the products available in the bundle over the next few months.

The End Of An Era - JVC Stops Standalone VCR Production

JVC, one of the creators of the VHS format and one of the earliest producers of VCRs, has announced they will cease production of standalone VCRs. Sales will end when existing stocks are depleted. However, they will continue to manufacture VHS/DVD combo units for those still clinging to their video tapes. (I personally own hundreds of VHS tapes, but I haven’t actually used one in ages. Just last night I found a stash of unused blank tapes still in shrink wrap, must be from before I got TiVo in 2002.) Since 1976 more than 900 million VCRs have been produced worldwide, and 50 million of those by JVC.

Another Amazon Deal On The Samsung BD-P1500

The bundle deal with The Ultimate Matrix Collection expired on the 18th, but they’ve replaced it with a new deal. Purchase the Samsung BD-P1500, currently listed at $223.60, and select two free Blu-ray titles from a list of 39 available. Pricing on the titles available run from $13.95 to $19.95. Not quite as good a deal as the Matrix promo, but still a pretty good one. Right now this looks like the best offer for a Profile 2.0 / BD-Live player.

Through October 18th buy the Samsung BD-P1500 Blu-ray player from Amazon and get The Ultimate Matrix Collection on Blu-ray free! On top of that you get The Ultimate Matrix Collection free - it sells for $89.95, $129.95 MSRP. That’s like getting the player for $139.95, a steal.
