Setting Custom Styles

I know that not everyone likes the style and colors of the site, and I also know that no matter what I select it will never make everyone happy. So, instead, I’m putting the power in your hands. There is a Style Selector in the upper-right-hand corner which allows you to select you own style. You can select the default site style, the old TiVo Lovers style, or a black & white style. But if you want even more control, you can create your own custom CSS and apply that. You’ll have to create and host the CSS file somewhere else, anywhere on the web. Once you’ve done that you can select ‘Other’ and enter your URL in the box to use your custom style sheet.

The custom style sheet is applied in addition to the default style sheet. So you need only override the styles that you want to change, you needn’t re-create all of the styles from scratch. Though you can go as crazy as you wish. Also, note that you’ll need JavaScript enabled to use custom styles. Since I use server caching to speed up the site and reduce server load, the custom style sheet is applied using JavaScript so each user may have their own custom style yet still use the cached pages.

If you are trying to create a custom style and it would make life easier if some element on the page had a class or id attribute added, feel free to ask by leaving a comment. I can’t promise I’ll add it, but I definitely will consider it. Most of the elements on the page already have class and/or id attributes for the default style that you can use. And feel free to share any creative styles you come up with in a comment. I may even add some to the site (with permission of course) if they’re good.

Now, as a warning, it is possible to do bad things with a style sheet. So be careful about using a style sheet supplied by some 3rd party. You may want to make a copy to host yourself, so you know what is in it, rather than linking to another site. Even if you vet the CSS before linking to it, it can change at any time without your knowledge.
