Android Kicking Ass and Taking Names

Asymco Units Shipped by Smartphone Platform Asymco has produced some graphs showing the amazing arc Android growth is on. These are units shipped, not sold, granted, but it is still a comparison between platforms. Smartphone market penetration is now over 30% of the total phone market. Android has a dominant lead with 17.6% of the overall phone market, the iPhone has a quarter of that with 4.4% of the total market. It is rounded out by Symbian with 4.3%, Blackberry with 2.76%, Samsung’s Bada with 1%, and Windows Phone brings up the rear with 0.5%. Android has really had a meteoric rise since it launched three years ago.

Asymco Market Share by Smartphone Vendor Looking at a graph of market share by smartphone vendor, the precipitous decline of Nokia is painfully obvious, and it looks like RIM isn’t doing so well either. On the other hand, you can see the rapid rise of Samsung. Samsung has claimed 26% of the global smartphone market, becoming the largest vendor. Apple slipped from 19% to close to 14%, but that could be due to anticipation of the iPhone 4S (the figures are from before the launch). Nokia has toppled from the top of the heap to under 14% in roughly a year. HTC overtook RIM with 11% to 9% as the former continues to gain market share and the latter loses it. Sony has approximately 6%, LG 5%, and Motorola 4%.

Asymco Units Shipped by Smartphone Vendor Unsurprisingly the units shipped by vendor closely aligns with the market share of each vendor. The sheer number of devices being shipped is really impressive.

Woot! – Kingston Wi-Drive 16GB Wireless Flash Storage for iOS Devices Just $69.99 – $49.99 after rebate!

Kingston Wi-Drive 16GB Wireless Flash Storage for iOS Devices Today’s Woot! deal is the Kingston Wi-Drive 16GB Wireless Flash Storage for iOS Devices for $69.99 + $5 S&H. And, on top of that, there is a $20 manufacturer’s rebate. That brings the price down to $49.99. MSRP is $129.99, so that’s an $80 total savings after rebate. Amazon also has it for $69.99, but there is no rebate.

The Wi-Drive supports 801.11g/n networking so up to three iDevices can access content stored on the Wi-Drive simultaneously – iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. It also acts as a sharing hub so you can share media from your device with the others connected to the Wi-Drive. You just need the free Wi-Drive app.

Kingston even put together a cheesy video showing how it can be used:

Galaxy Nexus Launches, Google Posts A Slew of Videos to Showcase It

Galaxy Nexus three view While Verizon has yet to announce the launch date for their 4G LTE Galaxy Nexus variant (12/8 seems to be the latest rumor), and I’m jealously watching my fiancee play with her new Droid RAZR, the HSPA+ version of the Galaxy Nexus has launched on carriers in a number of countries. Timed with the launch, Google has posted a number of videos to highlight the various features of their new flagship Android phone. It gives us a nice look at Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Here they are:

You know, speaking of the Verizon version that I’m waiting for, we also got the official details on the differences between the LTE & HSPA+ variants. The LTE model is slightly thicker and heavier, with a tad more battery capacity. While the official specs list storage as 16GB, and it seems all the phones available currently are 16GB, it has been widely reported that a 32GB model is in the works. The official site used to say 16/32GB, though it now says just 16GB. Perhaps the 32GB version is still up in the air, or won’t be available at launch so they want to narrow the message. Given my history with my OG Droid, and how much of my content is in the cloud anyway, I could probably live with 16GB. But I’d still like to have 32GB, just in case.

Samsung has rather more detailed information on the HSPA+ version of the phone on sale in the UK. The US version of the page isn’t up yet since the phone hasn’t launched.

Roku Roadtrip! Streaming Boxes Headed to Canada and the UK

Roku Logo Roku is bringing their streaming player set top boxes to Canada and the United Kingdom in early 2012, according to a press release. Roku is the leading streaming platform in the US, with over 350 content channels as well as casual gaming. For their launch in Canada and the UK they will be working with local content providers to add region specific channels for the local audience. In fact, they’re looking for a few good mencontent providers:

Roku is expanding its open platform to support region-specific channels. Publishers of video, music, games and other Internet-delivered content can now reach their customers’ TVs directly through Roku. Content can be free, ad supported or paid. Those interested in developing for Roku should contact partners@roku.com

No word yet on which model(s) of Roku will launch in each country, or the pricing. But since they mention gaming it is safe to presume they’ll be similar to the Roku 2 products recently launched in the US.
