Sling Media releases Slingbox firmware update

While I was focused on preparing my TiVo HD review, Sling Media slipped one by me. On Friday they released a firmware update for all Slingbox models. If you have a Slingbox, check it out.

Another boost for Blu-ray – Target only selling BD hardware

Until now, Target stores have not sold players for either high-def disc format, now Forbes is reporting that Target will begin selling Sony’s $499 BDP-S300 Blu-ray player in October for the fall holiday season. It will be the focus of a display including BD movies from Disney and Sony.

Target will not sell HD DVD players in their stores, though they do offer them on their website. And they do sell both formats of discs in the stores. But they’re clearly favoring BD in the stores by only carrying the BD player and setting up special displays for the format.

Picked up from EngadgetHD.

SlingCatcher delayed until the fall

Bad news for those of us waiting for it, it looks like the SlingCatcher has been delayed until the fall. Engadget contacted Sling Media to find out what the status was, and that’s what they were told. When it was announced at CES 2007 in January, the release time-frame was given as ‘summer’. It looks like Sling was a bit to optimistic with the aggressive development schedule.

All the HD DVD stats you never wanted

HD DVD studio market share pie chart

If you enjoyed our previous post, All the Blu-ray stats you never wanted, you’ll probably enjoy this post too.

Yes, from the makers of Blu-rayStats.com, I bring you HDDVDStats.com. And yes, it does seem to be the same people – or person. Both sites are registered to Dave Cowl of Rhobot Corp in Sunnyvale, CA. The HD DVD domain was registered on July 19th, while the BD site was registered on July 4th. Which explains why I didn’t find the HD DVD site when I went looking after discovering the BD site. ;-)

More of the same – lots of tabular data you can slice and dice, and it generates charts for you like the one I included here. Everything for the statistically obsessed.

As with the BD site, I spotted this one via EngadgetHD.

Both WeaKnees and DVRupgrade are already offering the TiVo HD for pre-order. Both the basic 160GB unit for $299, as well as expanded units, up to 1TB. It looks like DVRUpgrade has better pricing on the larger models. You can also pre-order the basic box directly from TiVo or from Best Buy or Circuit City.

As always, if you activate a new TiVo, I appreciate the TiVo Rewards Referral points.
