The Hits Keep Coming For HD DVD, Blu-ray Pulls Away

Things aren’t looking much better for HD DVD with the new figures out from Nielsen VideoScan. While up slightly from the 85/15 split for the week ending 1/13, it is indeed only very slight. The numbers for the week ending 1/20, as published by Home Media Magazine, give Blu-ray an 83/17 split with HD DVD. The Top 10 High-Def Sellers list is also dominated by Blu-ray. Via EngadgetHD.

At the same time, NPD has expanded on the player sales numbers leaked via The Digital Bits earlier this week. Blu-ray’s 93/7 advantage over HD DVD is due more to HD DVD player sales tanking than BD sales increasing. According to NPD’s raw retail data, as published by Home Media Magazine, consumers purchased only 1,758 HD DVD players the week of 1/12, down from 14,558 the previous week. While consumers purchased 21,770 BD players, up from 15,257 the previous week. It remains to be seen how much ground HD DVD can recover in light of Toshiba’s price cuts which took effect on 1/13. Amazon Unbox Weekend Sale

This weekend’s Amazon Unbox sale seems a bit weak. They’re offering Live Free or Die Hard for $2.49, and Superbad, Mr. Woodcock, and Eastern Promises for $2.99. What happened to the good old days of $.99 titles?

On the other hand, the anime sale I mentioned last week is still running. And there are a few free downloads available – like the premier episodes of the new cable series Breaking Bad and Head Case.

Updates Coming For Comcast TiVo

A Comcast rep posted to AVS Forum last week with some more information about the current Comcast TiVo roll out in the Boston area. Issues experienced by the current users were addressed:

There will be a software release rolling out to the field in the next several weeks that will address many of the issues reported. For example, Dolby Digital output will work correctly on DCH set-top boxes. And the HD filter option in the Guide will perform much more responsively, and provide the correct chronological sort (rather than alphabetical).

Beyond this near-term release, Comcast and TiVo have a roadmap for additional software releases that will continue to improve the polish and performance of the product, as well as add some compelling new features.

They also stated that Comcast is working on the installation process to make it smoother in the future. This is their first experience with ‘flipping’ a STB to a new software platform and activating the cable modem built into the STB, so they’re learning as they go as well.

In case there are doubts, TiVoPony confirmed it is a real Comcast rep posting.
