DISH Network DTVPal Website Launched

DISH Network has launched a website for their DTVPal Digital-To-Analog Converter set-top box, the STB formerly known as the TR40. A prototype was shown as CES in Sling Media branding, but it looks like they’ll be marketing it as DISH Network. Which actually seems a little confusing to me, as people associate DISH Network with satellite, and might not understand this is a terrestrial ATSC converter box. It is unclear if the DTVPal may yet also show up in Sling Media and/or EchoStar branding.

According to the website the DTVPal will be available for order in ‘late June’, though prices are not yet listed. It is a very simple device. It has one input – antenna coax, two sets out outputs – one RF coax modulated for channel 3 or 4 and one composite video with stereo audio, and one power connector. For such a simple device the remote has a number of buttons, but the image is too small to make out what they’re all labeled. Though they have loaded the box with a number of extra features, which probably explains the buttons. Among the features are an EPG, closed-caption decoding, parental controls, an event timer to auto-tune scheduled programs, and a program search function.

No word yet on the DTVPal DVR, which seems to be the new name for the TR50 OTA DVR shown at CES. It is looking like ‘DVTPal’ will be the new branding for OTA ATSC devices from EchoStar.

Disclaimer: I’m currently employed by Sling Media, which is owned by EchoStar, who produces the DTVPal for DISH Network. Convoluted enough? It’s like Dark Helmut and Lone Starr.

Amazon To Launch Video Streaming Service Soon

There aren’t any real details yet, but during the D: All Things Digital conference Amazon founder Jeff Bezos said (according to CNET):

We are working on a new version of video on demand, a for pay streaming service we will release in the next couple of weeks. The streaming service will start instantly and it’s a la carte, for pay.

And that’s pretty much all we know. It sounds like they’re looking to head off Netflix. Amazon already has the download service with the broadest selection of video, and by adding streaming they’ll have downloads (purchase and rental) and streaming. Downloads appeal to those looking for higher quality, or those who don’t have a fast enough broadband connection to stream are decent quality. While streaming appeals more to those who are impatient and want instant gratification. And streaming could be extended to platforms that can’t handle downloads since the hardware requirement is lower (no storage). I do hope that there is some synergy – if you purchase a download from Unbox you should be able to stream it later since you own it.

Unlike Netflix, which includes all-you-can-stream content in a monthly subscription, it looks like Amazon will be a pay-per-stream model. And no, there is no word on if this will come to TiVo to compliment the current Unbox downloads. The system is certainly technically capable of supporting it, though it’d probably be restricted to the Series3 and TiVo HD since streaming MPEG-2 (for the S2) would be a non-starter. I’d expect Amazon to use H.264 or WMV/VC-1 for streaming.

TiVo Reports Results for the First Quarter Fiscal Year 2009 Ended April 30, 2008

TiVo announced their F1Q09 results today and held their usual conference call and webcast. Honestly, from a geek standpoint, this was a snooze. Financially the company seems to be doing OK, once again beating estimates. But nothing new was said about any products – nothing on Unbox HD, YouTube, the ‘Series4′ tru2way box, etc. Normally there is at least one or two tidbits, especially during the Q&A, but if there were this time I missed them. Oh wait, one thing, Comcast will be rolling out the TiVo software to another New England state, other than MA and NH.

An overview:

- TiVo posts record quarter for Net Income and Adjusted EBITDA
- Adjusted EBITDA for the first quarter was $11.1 million, exceeding guidance and compared to $6.7 million in the year-ago quarter
- Net Income for the first quarter was $3.6 million compared to $835 thousand in the year-ago quarter and EPS for the first quarter was $0.04 compared to $0.01 in the year-ago quarter
- Favorable ruling in EchoStar patent infringement case upheld; EchoStar’s petition for rehearing en banc denied
- Disney directly signs with TiVo making all the major movie studios’ content available to TiVo users
- TiVo teams with Chicago Tribune to reinvent newspaper model on TV coverage
