TiVo2DVD for UNIX/Linux users

My friend usagijer tipped me off to a new item on SourceForge: TiVo2DVD.

Tivo2dvd creates and executes the series of commands required to access, format, and burn television shows from a Series II Tivo directly to a DVD. It supports processing multiple shows at once, to a DVD with menus.

As the man page says:

tivo2dvd is a command-line script which automates the process of fetching television programs off of a Series II Tivo device, processing them, and burning them to a DVD.

To use TiVo2DVD you must have the prerequisites installed: perl, curl, Net::Tivo, tivodecode, transcode, mjpegtools, and tovid.

Technically it is supposed to run on any POSIX OS, so you could probably get this to work on MacOS, and even Windows. But this is definitely not something for non-geeks.

Official TiVo page on DST changes

TiVo has posted an official page addressing the DST changes on their support site.

This is good – but I’m a bit disappointed in TiVo. This is exactly the kind of thing that there should be a TiVo message about on the box. There are going to be countless TiVo users who do not keep track of the online communities but who use the TiVo daily. C’mon TiVo, get a message out to the boxes ASAP! It really should have happened by now, but at least get one out before the change. It is a bit frustrating that TiVo is hit and miss about messages.

EDIT: Well, I say jump and TiVo… OK, no. :-) But, according to a comment, a message *has* appeared on a user’s Series2 tonight so it looks like TiVo has started pushing out messages. So I retract my earlier statement, TiVo just waited a while.

More about Unbox – Amazon Previews on TiVoCast & semi-official Unbox Blog

TiVo’s E. Stephen Mack has a post in his blog today with some more info. Along with the launch of Unbox today, TiVo has added an Amazon Previews channel to TiVoCast. This will download previews of new Unbox content to your TiVo. Very nice idea, I think.

Also, he points out the semi-official Amazon Unbox blog, which is now syndicated as unbox_blog_feed.
