DISH Network Hopper Ad Campaign

Dish Network Hopper I won’t go into the product features of the DISH Network Hopper, since I’ve already done that, this post is about the ad campaign. I’ve seen three TV spots for the Hopper so far – which are the three they’ve conveniently posted: I’ve already commented on the first spot, ‘Boston’, which features the stereotypical South Boston, aka Southie, accent. Living in MA, and having a wife from South Boston, no, everyone does not actually sound like this:

The common factor in the campaign, summed up in one word, would have to be: quirky. They really don’t say much about the product, just quickly work in the highlights of “record up to six programs” and “lots of storage”. The second ad is even stranger:

Personally I feel like the take away from this one is that if you buy a Hopper you’re crazy enough to jump out of a moving car to avoid losing an argument. I’m not sure that’s a selling point.

The last one features a frighteningly peppy family in what seems to be commentary on the dangers of over-praising… or maybe I’m reading too much into the ad:

Personally I don’t think these ads are that great, and I prefer something with more actual product info, but I know I’m not the target market average consumer. What do you think about the campaign? Do you have a Hopper?

Virgin Media TiVo Gets BBC Red Button Functionality

Virgin Media Logo Last month Virgin Media promised BBC Red Button support would deploy in April – and they’ve delivered on that promise:

We’re very happy to announce that BBC Red Button is now available to Virgin Media TiVo customers. The features available include video news, full length text articles from the BBC News website and coverage of F1 season that is always up to date and available whenever you want to watch. Later this year the BBC Sport Red button services will be extended to cover other major events e.g. Euro 2012, Wimbledon and Olympics.

If you’re watching any BBC channel, just press the red button on your TiVo remote. Then arrow up or down to choose iPlayer or the News or Sports app, then select OK. Or you can select the BBC News or Sports app from the ‘Apps & Games’ section of your TiVo menu.

The new service is being rolled out to everyone over the next 24 hours, so don’t worry if you can’t see it yet.

Thanks
Mark Wilkin
Help & Support Forum Manager

Actually they started deploying it a week ago, on April 11th, I’m just a little behind on my reporting.

Claim Your ASUS Transformer Prime GPS Extension Kit Now

ASUS Transformer Prime GPS Extension Kit If you, like myself, own an ASUS Transformer Prime Android tablet, you’ve probably heard about the issues with GPS reception. The nice metal case is great – except that it isn’t so friendly to GPS radio signals. Personally I’ve never really had a problem. It is A-GPS and it has always locked up a solid position pretty quickly between the WiFi and GPS signals. A ten inch tablet isn’t something you’re normally going to use as a mobile GPS device anyway. ASUS ‘fixed’ the problem by simply dropping ‘GPS’ from the product feature list, along with software tweaks to improve performance as best they can with the existing hardware.

However, all of that said, some people are understandably upset, or at least annoyed, by the issue. Well, ASUS has decided to make things right, at no cost to owners. Now through July 31, 2012 they are offering a free dongle, properly called the ASUS Transformer Prime GPS Extension kit. If you own an ASUS Transformer Prime simply follow the instructions to file your claim. It is fairly simply – just register your Transformer Prime, if you haven’t already, and then click on the link to claim your dongle. They’ll send you one that matches the finish on your tablet.

The dongle itself is fairly large, as you can see in the image above. It is a bar that clips on the bottom of the tablet, using the same connections as the keyboard dock. That does mean you can’t use the dongle and the keyboard at the same time. And there is no indication that the dongle has a pass through for the 40-pin connector – which would mean no charging while it is in use. But hey – it is free.

Where Does Sling Media Get Their Designs?

Slingbox PRO-HD Dave Zatz of Zatz Not Funny recently called my attention to the site of New Deal Design. Specifically because we’re both ex-Sling employees, and it turns one one of New Deal Design’s clients is Sling Media.

They have a short video which walks through the different generations of their designs for Sling Media and highlights some of the key design points:

They also have one on the Sling Touch Control 100, which they designed of course:

This was announced at CES 2010, but I don’t believe it ever shipped.

New Deal Design has worked on a number of other well known projects as well – such as the Lytro, Sifteo Cubes, the Fitbit Wellness Tracker, and, reaching way back, the Palm Zire. They’re the design wizards behind the curtain.
