Buy.com is selling Roxio Toast 9 for just $57.99, discounted from the $99.95 MSRP. Combined with a $20 mail in rebate it is just $37.99. Roxio Toast 9 is the only application officially sanctioned by TiVo for Mac OS to handle burning TiVoToGo files to DVD.

Autographed TiVo HD Charity Auction

Tracy Sestili, TiVo’s Director of Operations, is auctioning off another autographed TiVo HD unit on eBay for charity. 100% of the proceeds are going to Stand Up To Cancer and The Beverly Fund.

This time the TiVo HD is autographed by Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Garner, Jack Black, Josh Grobin, Kirsten Dunst, and Ellen DeGeneres. The TiVo HD also includes product lifetime service, a $399 value that combined with the $299.99 MSRP of the box makes this a $698.99 value before the autographs – and right now the high bid is $400.

Tracy got the units autographed after winning the grand prize to sit in the celebrity phone bank on the Stand Up To Cancer show on September 5th.

A Quick Note About The Site Ads Today

I normally keep hot button issues like politics out of this blog, but I noticed that the Google AdSense ads today have been displaying banners for ProtectMarriage.com and their “Yes on 8″ position. I in no way endorse their position and I was disturbed and angered seeing these ads on my site. I realize that’s a risk in using open ad networks where I don’t pre-screen every ad, so I don’t blame Google.

I can’t express how much I disagree with the very notion of California Proposition 8. I regret that I haven’t moved to CA yet so I could be able to vote NO on 8. (I’ll be moving to CA (again) at some point now that my job is based there.)

I’ve added their domain to my ad filters, but that can take a few hours to take effect. I just hope that, if you live in CA, you’ll be voting NO on 8 tomorrow. But, in general, even if we don’t agree, I hope you’ll be voting tomorrow. (Yeah, presuming you live in the US, are eligible to vote, etc… pedants. ;-) )

Comments are off on this one since I really don’t feel like having a political discussion on this blog. I wouldn’t have mentioned it if not for the ads and not wanting anyone to think I wanted them on this site.

Holographic Storage – Tomorrow’s Technology… Tomorrow.

This is beginning to sound like the Moller Sky Car, Duke Nukem Forever, or Digeo releasing a consumer Moxi DVR. Back in April, InPhase Technologies said they’d be announcing a holographic storage product in May. Well, now they’re saying it won’t ship until late 2009.

I first posted about holographic storage in 2005, and then again in 2007, but I’ve been reading about it for at least 10 years. Well before Blu-ray and HD DVD, back when DVD was still new and gaining ground, I was reading about holographic storage and how it was the Next Big Thing. It certainly is a promising concept, and it has worked in the lab, but that last step to commercialization seems to be a doozie.

But InPhase isn’t alone, GE’s Integrated Polymer Systems Lab has also announced a contender for the holographic storage market. Their solution uses polycarbonate discs, like CD, DVD, or Blu-ray and the holographic discs could be read in drives which could also read those formats, making it another generation of backwards compatible technology. That’s if they ever come to market, and I won’t be holding my breath.

Netflix Silverlight Streaming Now Available For Macs (And Windows)

The new Silverlight-based Netflix streaming option is available now for anyone who wants to wants to try it out. It might not be a big deal for Windows users, who already have access, especially since the new client is still a beta without access to all videos, but this is the first client to support the Mac.
