More Information On TiVo Australia

Sorry for the wave of TiVo Australia posts, I keep getting new alerts with new info after I’ve already posted. Better than no news, right?

APCMag.com has more news on what’s coming for TiVo in Australia. By the end of the week Hybrid TV Services will be offering three games, Classy Couples, Sudoku and Wild Pair, as well as a world clock and horoscopes. Joining them soon will be PixelEye, a service which provides access to Photobucket and Picasa – which US TiVo users already enjoy.

Coming on February 3, 2009 will be a 1TB external drive, eSATA I presume. I’d like to see 1TB offered here, currently the official expansion drive is 500GB. Also coming in early 2009 will be the addition of DMG Radio channels Nova and Vega FM, providing music through TiVo. And they did confirm Domino’s Pizza ordering is coming in early 2009 as well.

They’ve also released some statistics. The first test title for broadband movie downloads, The Water Horse, has been downloaded by 25% of TiVo owners. And 73% of TiVo users access the weather information currently available via broadband at least once a week.

TiVo Guilt? Don’t They Have A Pill For That?

CNN had an amusing fluff piece on TiVo today – well, I found it amusing anyway. It was about ‘TiVo guilt’ – which is the feeling some users apparently suffer from when they have a backlog of recordings on their TiVo. Guilt over being behind, feeling like they have to watch everything they’ve recorded.

This isn’t the first time I’ve seen a story along these lines, several others have touched on this and given in various labels in the past. It seems to be a fairly simple ‘human interest’ or ‘impact of technology’ story for slow news days. The article itself even mentions there are past articles about the topic.

They also managed to make actress Amanda Peet sound ditzy:

“I do have weird OCD where I need to clean out my TiVo,” she said. “Like we’ve had Ken Burns’ ‘The War’ on there forever and we’re not gonna watch it, like I’m not gonna watch it cause I’m too scared. Or we’ll have back episodes of um, ‘Meet The Press’ — I’m obsessed with my Sunday shows like ‘Meet The Press’ and ‘Face The Nation.’ … They’re like from before the election, I’m like ‘I can’t [delete them], I have to watch them’ and [my husband says], ‘It’s already happened, you’ve already read everything you’re going to read about this stuff.’ “

Like, um, really? (I know many people talk like that, but that’s why you don’t do literal quoting of verbal pauses and ticks. It makes the subject sound bad.)

I find the whole thing kind of silly, if you’re recording too much content to keep up with it without feeling stressed out – drop something. It is just TV, no one is going to die if you don’t watch it all. It isn’t like you promised TiVo you’d watch if it recorded for you. I think the issue is really a loss of perspective about what’s involved. TV is entertainment, even the educational shows, and shouldn’t be stressing you out. If it is – you’re doing it wrong. The TiVo works for you, you shouldn’t feel like you work for it. Just remember that.

TiVomino’s Coming To Australia

Yeah, TiVomino’s is a neologism I just made up, deal with it. Anyway, this shouldn’t be a surprise. First it was announced that pizza ordering would be coming to Australian TiVos. And then Domino’s Pizza ordering was announced for the US. So if you can put 2+2 together, it should be obvious what I’m coming to – the pizza ordering in Australia will also be Domino’s. At least that’s what the Sydney Morning Herald is reporting Hybrid TV Services, the Australian distributor of TiVo, is now saying.

Dish Network Looking For Jury Angle With TiVo

On November 20th the U.S. District Court of Texas set a date of February 17, 2009 for a bench trial to determine if EchoStar’s software is still infringing on TiVo’s patents. But now, according to the San Jose Mercury News, Dish Network is angling for a jury trial on the issue.

If the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington decides that a jury trial is warranted, it would bring everything around to where it was a few years ago – a trial to determine if TiVo’s patents are being infringed. While the jury in the first trial sided with TiVo, and the verdict was upheld on appeal, Dish claims that their new software is no longer infringing. So if a new trial is granted it’d be the same case, redux.

I Am Not A Lawyer, but it seems odd to me. Can this be stretched out indefinitely just by issuing software updates and saying each one needs a new jury trial to determine if it is infringing? I think this show jumped the shark.

Disclaimer: I work for Sling Media, which is owned by EchoStar.

Blockbuster Teams With Microsoft For Mobile Movies

Blockbuster has teamed with Microsoft to bring digital video to mobile devices using Microsoft’s Live Mesh technology. It sounds like this will still be a download service and not streaming, based on the suggested use case of buying content from an airport kiosk to sync to a mobile device to use while traveling. Though you might think otherwise from this quote:

“Eventually, we’ll give customers instant access to any movie on any device with an internet connection and a screen,” vowed Blockbuster Chief Information Officer Keith Morrow in an interview with the Dallas Morning News.

When I read“instant access to any movie on any device with an Internet connection and a screen” my first thought is instant streaming access, not download to watch. But that’s marketing spin for you.
