TiVo Talks To Broadband TV News At Cable Congress

TiVo Logo Broadband TV News interviewed Joshua Danovitz, General Manager, International for TiVo at the recent Cable Congress in Brussels, and they’ve posted the video.

Joshua covers a lot of interesting territory, with the primary focus being on TiVo’s app support. TiVo is focused on providing a consistent app environment across their platforms, be it retail or provider units. Today the focus on on the Adobe Air/Flash environment which is used on the retail and MSO Premiere units in the US, and the Virgin Media and ONO boxes in Europe. There is still support for the Java environment used on earlier platforms, as in HME, and TiVo is looking at other environments.

For developers seeking to get their app onto TiVo they work directly with TiVo for the retail market, but need to work with the providers for their TiVo units. TiVo can help facilitate those conversations for developers seeking to get their apps on multiple platforms, but it is up to the individual operators to approve an app for their customers.

He also talked a bit about working with different size operators, from giants like Comcast and Charter with millions of users, down to small MSOs with 150,000 subscribers. Definitely worth watching, IMHO. Now if we could just have the SDK released and actually start seeing more apps!

A Look Inside The Boeing 787 Flight Test Program

Boeing Logo Boeing’s posted a nice video look into the flight test program for the B787 Dreamliner. I love this kind of thing; of course, I’m a wee bit of a tech geek. The most visually impressive tests, in my opinion, are the Rejected Takeoff, at the 7:00 mark, and the Crosswind Landing at the 8:14 mark. But I think the whole thing is work watching.

Boeing Celebrates The Completion Of The 1000th B777, With A Big EGO

Boeing Logo Boeing continues to release videos as part of their celebration for the B777 line hitting 1,000 aircraft. This one is a look at the 1,000th B777 itself and the actual celebration held for its completion, all shiny and ready for delivery to Emirates. There it’ll join the 102 B777s already in service with Emirates, which plans to operate 200 of them by 2020. Emirates is a committed B777 operator, having used all six models of the aircraft, the -200, -200ER, -200LR, -300, -300ER, and the 777F (freighter based on the -200LR). The 1,000th B777 is a 777-300ER, the largest in the family and the second longest ranged, after the -200LR.

The GE90-115 engines on the -300ER are the most powerful turbine engines in use, rated at 115,540 pounds of thrust each, though they hold the Guinness Record at 127,900 pounds of thrust. As a mark of how far we’ve come, note that Boeing’s first jet airliner, the B707, was initially powered by engines producing 13,000 pounds of thrust. A single engine on today’s B777 produces twice as much thrust as all four engines on the first B707s, while being vastly more reliable, fuel efficient, and quieter.

The B777 is a remarkable aircraft, I can’t wait to see what’s next with the planned -8X/-9X models.

Oh, and the bit in the subject about the ‘Big EGO’ – if you watched the video you might’ve noticed the tail number is A6-EGO.

Woot! – iGo Green Battery Charger With 8 Batteries Just $9.99

iGo Battery Charger with 8 Rechargeable Batteries Today’s Woot! deal is the iGo Green Battery Charger with eight rechargeable alkaline AA batteries for only $9.99 + $5 S&H. The charger handles four AA and AAA rechargeable batteries, in any combination, and it can charge NiMH or alkaline cells.

It comes with eight iGo Green AA alkaline rechargeable batteries. Unlike most other rechargeable cells, these alkaline rechargeables provide the standard 1.5V output you get from standard alkaline batteries. And they store 2000mAh, so you have decent life. They’re also designed for ‘charge and store’, and will hold their charger for up to seven years. They ship charged so they’re ready to use out of the box. And because they’re alkaline cells, they’re non-toxic with no heavy metals – unlike NiMH or NiCad cells.

Amazon sells the charger and just four batteries for $13.30, here you’re getting the charger and eight batteries for $14.99. I have some ancient NiMH AA & AAA batteries that I’ve been meaning to replace for months, since they no longer hold a charge well, so I’m jumping on this deal myself – and picking up some more iGo batteries from Amazon.
