Get Laplink PCmover FREE – Today only!

Today, Thursday, May 15th, is Laplink‘s 25th birthday, and to celebrate they’re giving away copies of their PCmover product, normally $49.95, for FREE! And in addition to the free copies of PCmover, they’re offering steep discounts on other products, including partner products, such as Laplink Gold 2008 – normally $89.95, for $29.95 or Webroot Spy Sweeper, normally $29.95, just $9.95. And there are others.

But these offers are only good today, May 15, 2008. They don’t say what time, specifically, the offers end – midnight perhaps, but which time zone? – so don’t procrastinate if you want the specials.

EchoStar To Show Off The SlingModem At The Cable Show

Last August, I was the first person to realize that Sling Media was working on a combination Slingbox/cable modem, which was later announced as the SlingModem at CES this year. To emphasize the separation and Dish Network and EchoStar, and that EchoStar, which owns Sling Media, is an independent hardware vendor and not tied solely to Dish Network, they’re presenting the SlingModem at The Cable Show as their first product targeting the cable industry. They’ve kicked out a press release (below) as well as new official photos of the SlingModem. Click on the photos for larger versions.

Heads-Up for a Small Subset of Computer Users

If you have a Hewlett-Packard desktop computer with an AMD processor and are running the factory install of Windows XP, you may wish to know that, as configured from the factory, your computer will stop working, in a way that will do no irreparable harm but may startle you considerably, if you install XP Service Pack 3.

Oddly, this is not Microsoft’s fault, it’s HP’s; they were lazy and didn’t remove an Intel processor driver, intelppm.sys, from the disk image used to create the AMD systems. This is normally not a problem, but when restarting after the application of XPSP3, it becomes one, to the tune of rebooting forever and ever until you stick your foot in the door and boot into safe mode. I ran into this interesting state of affairs this morning.

The fix that worked for me is relatively simple – get into the recovery console and tell it “disable intelppm”, and Bob’s your uncle. There are a few other ways of getting it done, including one for regedit studs. More information is here.

There are also a couple of other things that can cause SP3 to have reboot problems, but that seems to be the most prevalent and it’s the one I have personal experience with, so I figured I’d do a little signal repeating. More info on the other failure states can be found here (and if you follow the links far enough, you’ll end up at the first page I linked about).

Heads Up For Mac Using TiVo Owners

It looks like the recent Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 1, which installs J2SE 6 v1.6.0_05, may break TiVoToGo functionality in Roxio products. MacFixIt has the details, which is based on user reports in the Roxio support forums and MacFixIt readers. The update is not supposed to change the system Java Preference setting, but it appears that it does, at least for some users. The solution, aside from not installing the Java update, appears to be setting the system Java Preference to the old version. At least until an update that corrects the problem is available. See MacFixIt for more info.

Samsung BD-P1500 Sneaks Out, Hold Off On That Funai

You might want to hold off on buying the Funai Blu-ray player from my last post. The Samsung BD-P1500, expected in June, is showing up in Wal*Mart with a $348 price tag – the expected MSRP was $399. That’s just $50 more than the Funai/Magnavox deck, and the Samsung is ‘BD-Live Ready’. That means it will ship with Profile 1.1, aka ‘Bonus View’, support but it has the hardware (such as a Ethernet port) required for Profile 2.0/BD-Live, and support will be enabled via a firmware update later this year. The firmware update will also add DTS-HD audio support.

While a sub-$300 price tag is nice, for $50 I’d definitely opt for the Samsung.
