DVRs In 44% Of US Households By 2014

According to an article in TVWeek, research firm Magna released a report saying 44% of US households will have a DVR by 2014. They believe this will lower viewing impressions across all dayparts by 4%, but will also increase TV viewing so in the end total viewing impressions will be up 20%. They also say that video-on-demand will increase from 40.4 to 68.8 million households and broadband from 68.3 to 86.2 million by 2014.

TiVo Goes To 11!

Nigel Tufnel should be happy with TiVo’s latest software update for Series3 and TiVo HD models, as it is version 11. Zatz Not Funny mentioned that version 11 is hitting Series3, TiVo HD, and TiVo HD XL units. Poking around the net it looks like this started trickling out back on November 20th. TiVo usually trickles out a release as the last test before launching the full download for everyone, and it looks like the floodgates opened within the past day or so. A number of people are now reporting receiving it, and my Series3 downloaded it today and I just restarted to install it.

The version number is 11.0-01-2-648 on my S3. This update includes the changes seen in the 9.3.2 update that hit Series2 systems recently. Aside from those changes I don’t see any other differences. I looked through all the menus but nothing seemed different to me. I’m sure there are under-the-covers changes to warrant a major revision number jump. I’m guessing WMV/VC-1 decoding is in there for Netflix streaming support. And maybe some other surprises.

NewTeeVee Reviews Nero LiquidTV | TiVo PC

NewTeeVee’s Liane Cassavoy has test driven Nero LiquidTV | TiVo PC and posted a review. While the review starts out fairly positive, once she got into it she had some performance issues. As she states:

I love my TiVo DVR, so I had high expectations for Nero’s LiquidTV | TiVo PC, a combination of hardware and software that brings the features of a TiVo DVR to a PC. But after testing out a newly updated version of the product, I’m a bit disappointed, as it suffers from a few glitches that make me hesitate to recommend it.

Seven Network Considers Nero LiquidTV | TiVo PC For Australia

Smarthouse is reporting that Seven Network’s Hybrid Television Services is considering bringing Nero’s LiquidTV | TiVo PC to Australia. As I covered back in September, LiquidTV | TiVo PC turns a PC into a TiVo DVR with most of the feature you get in a standalone TiVo, and a few you don’t. Seven, of course, launched the standalone TiVo in Australia a mid-year. Bringing the PC software to Australia would expand the market to media center PC users, and I’m sure leverage the guide data infrastructure in place for the standalone model.

KoldCast TV Coming To TiVoCast

It looks like TiVo has picked up another content partner for TiVoCast. Tubefilter News is reporting that KoldCast TV has partnered with TiVo to bring their original web series to TiVoCast. They claim that it’ll start with ten of their programs hitting by the end of next week. KoldCast TV is home to a number of original series such as The Midwest Teen Sex Show, Poor Paul and After Judgment. Nice to see more original content coming to TiVo.
