Toshiba Readies Write-Once HD-DVDs

Discs, which will offer three times the storage of today’s DVD-R discs, will be available next year.

OK – so they’re 15GB HD-DVD-R and 1x. 8x is the max they’re ever go, and they make it sound like a stretch and a “dual-layer, 30GB disc could take several years to develop”.

Meanwhile BD has already agreed on a 2x speed spec (72Mbps), and BD-RE has been ratified for dual-layer 54GB discs, BD-R is expected to be ratified by the end of the year for the same.

And why is it that HD-DVD and HD-DVD-R are 15GB single-layer and 30GB dual-layer, while HD-DVD-RW is 20GB single layer, with no dual-layer planned? That’s always struck me as odd and I’ve never seen it explained.

Again, HD-DVD is not in the best interests of consumers, it is dead-end technology.

HD DVD write-once discs due in 2006

Hitachi Maxell and a unit of Mitsubishi Chemical said Wednesday they will launch HD DVD-based write-once discs next year, a move marking the latest development in a DVD format battle.
