Taiwan’s Blu-ray, HD DVD rival goes mass-market

Taiwan’s home-grown answer to next-generation optical disc formats like HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc has gone into mass production.

So it is DVD tweaked to hold a bit more data (probably a tighter spiral and/or smaller pits) and using WMV HD aka VC-1 for the codec. Very close to what Warner is trying to get the BDA to accept as an addition to the Blu-ray standard.

TiVo And Intel Working Together On Digital Home Initiatives

TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ: TIVO ), creator of and a leader in television services for digital video recorders, announced today that it is working with Intel to develop functionality in a TiVo application that will enable it to work with Intel Viiv technology to pave the way for a dramatic change in the way entertainment is consumed at home or on the go .

Honestly, from this press release, it is hard to tell what this is about. It sounds like a simple extension to the TiVo Desktop –It will allow existing TiVo subscribers to securely transfer their favorite television programs from their TiVo® Series2™ DVR to an Intel Viiv technology based PC using only the remote control. The ‘ToGo’ module to Galleon already does that. (If you have a networked TiVo, you owe it to yourself to check out Galleon.) The ‘securely’ could mean it is tied to the unique ID Intel is including in their new chip sets that will be part of ‘Viiv’, but as a AMD CPU buyer, it is of little use to me. :-)
