More information on TiVo KidZone

The official TiVo Blog has an entry on KidZone which includes more details about how it will work.

It does sound like parents will be able to control everything, and there will not be any requirement to use the lists from Common Sense Media nor Parents Television Council.

The New York Times also has coverage.

TV and Kids: Finally The Right Solution

The New TiVo® KidZone Gives Parents Powerful Combination of Expert Guidance with Unprecedented Control

And here is the new page on their site.

Well, it looks like Gear Live did have the real inside scoop last night, congrats guys. :-)

As a single guy who’ll pretty much watch anything, it isn’t that interesting to me. (Unless maybe I can invert it to block out the kids shows…) Interesting that they’re introducing a kind of partitioning feature where the kids get their own list of shows and menus. That feature could be useful in other ways, like his & hers virtual TiVos, roommates sharing a box, etc.

But I could see how this could be of interest to parents. What do the parents out there think?

More hints on TiVo’s morning announcement

I just spotted this entry in The Gadgetress Blog. Note what she says about TiVo:

As for Tivo, both me and the family editor got invites to the digital video recorder company’s big event in New York tomorrow to “unveil new family-friendly initiative.”

That lends some more weight to the Gear Live report that it is going to be a KidZone feature for parents to control what their children view.

I guess we’ll see in… 6.5 hours. :-)

TiVo to unveil a new initiative

This just popped up on a few blogs, like ZatzNotFunny, from TiVo:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MEDIA ADVISORY

TiVo TO UNVEIL NEW INITIATIVE
WHAT: TiVo is hosting a press conference to discuss important developments.
WHO: Tom Rogers, President and CEO, TiVo and selected other special guests
WHEN: Thursday, March 2nd at 11:00 a.m. ET
WHERE: The Museum of Television & Radio

Gear Live says they have the inside scoop on what it will be. A KidZone service to allow parents to setup custom channels to control what their children can watch, so they can use the TiVo unattended but only view pre-approved shows.

I don’t know. It could be that, it could be the official announcement of their new pricing structure. It could be related to the Comcast box and/or the Series3 – but I personally very strongly doubt that. It is too early for either of those – and I wouldn’t call those an ‘initiative’, as I could pricing or a kids focused service. It could be something completely different.
