TiVo’s broadband moves are getting some press coverage

Today’s TiVo announcements have already received a fair bit of press coverage:

TiVo isn’t even offered in Australia (yet), so I’m a little bit amused to see The Sydney Morning Herald covering the story, even if they did just pick it up from the AP wire.

There are other mentions too, but the list would get kind of long if I listed every paper/site that picked up the AP story, etc.

TIVO INTRODUCES NEW SERVICE FEATURE THAT ALLOWS HOME MOVIES TO BE SENT OVER THE INTERNET DIRECTLY TO

TiVo (NASDAQ: TIVO), the creator of and leader in television services for digital video recorders (DVR), today announced that it will debut a break-through new service early next year which will provide friends and families scattered across the country with an easy way to share their home videos, by sending them directly to the television. Rather than burning and mailing DVDs, or viewing videos uploaded on a computer, friends and family will now be able to set-up their own private channel to send home videos directly to a TiVo subscriber’s TV set.

This looks pretty nifty. I’d never heard of One True Media, but it looks like a fairly easy-to-use site for sharing video, and making ‘montages’ with uploaded photos, video, and music. A bit different from, say, YouTube or Google Video. (Though I think a similar arrangement with either, or both, of those sites would be a ‘killer app’ for TiVo – maybe the new 2.4 Desktop can help there.) Because you’ll be able to get a Season Pass to new videos from any given account, I could see people using it for a kind of Video Blog too. That’s kind of intriguing – thinking of things like the Series3 review I did a few months ago. Something like that done as a review video that any TiVo owner (well, S2 or S3) can watch would be interesting. Of course, I’m not really an ‘on camera’ personality. ;-)

TIVO ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP WITH TALENT AND LITERARY AGENCY INTERNATIONAL CREATIVE MANAGEMENT

TiVo (NASDAQ: TIVO), the creator of and leader in television services for digital video recorders (DVR), today announced a first-of-its-kind multi-faceted partnership with International Creative Management and its global branded entertainment division. One of the world’s leading talent and literary agencies, ICM will provide TiVo subscribers with TV show and film recommendations personally selected by some of the most well-known Hollywood actors and directors. Subscribers will then have the ability to have this content automatically recorded on their TiVo boxes. As part of this agreement, TiVo and ICM will work to develop a host of additional applications.

I can see how this would be interesting for some users, but I don’t really tend to follow ‘stars’ or care about what they watch. Now, maybe if Alton Brown were one of their Gurus, I might. :-)

TIVO SIGNS ON CBS INTERACTIVE AS FIRST NETWORK CONTENT PARTNER IN TIVOCAST

TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ: TIVO), the creator of and leader in television services for digital video recorders (DVR), today announced that it has signed CBS Interactive to deliver original programming created for the Web directly to television through the TiVoCast service. Additionally, TiVo signed on a list of other partners to deliver broadband content to the television including Reuters, Forbes, dLife, Plum TV and Nano. Launched earlier this year, the TiVoCast service brings a whole new line-up of content to the television by offering broadband video previously found only on the Web and not widely available on TV.

Some of the new TiVoCast content sounds interesting, at least something I’ll check out to see if I want to keep watching. But I still would like to see some ‘real’ content – TV show episodes, feature films, etc. And, personally, I’d love to see The Anime Network on TiVo. It seems like a perfect match – it is already primarily an OnDemand channel on most cable systems & Dish Network, and just last week they launched a version for Sprint Mobile subscribers to watch on their phones. And recently the competing FUNimation Channel has started up with a similar model.

TIVO ALLOWS VIEWERS TO CHOOSE BROADBAND VIDEO DELIVERED TO TV SET

In keeping with its mission to provide subscribers unprecedented control over their television viewing experience, TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ: TIVO) announced today it will enable TiVo subscribers to easily convert and transfer broadband video from their PC to their television sets. Through an expansion of its Desktop PC software later this year, TiVo subscribers will be able to view videos from the Web on their TVs, even if they are not originally in a format that televisions can display. This is in addition to the broadband programming delivered via TiVo’s TiVoCast direct delivery feature. TiVo, the creator of and leader in television services for digital video recorders (DVRs) , is the first and only DVR to offer this kind of access to broadband video on the television.

It looks like TiVo Desktop Plus 2.4 will be out later this year and it will support auto-transcoding of Internet video formats into MPEG2 for display via the TiVo. There are already some 3rd party tools that do this, but it is nice to see an ‘official’ solution for this since a lot of users aren’t comfortable finding alternative solutions. Of course, the press release talks only about Windows – I do hope the Mac solution finally appears. It has been too long.
