Save $100 on 750GB TiVo Series3

DVRupgrade.com is running a July 4th special – save $100 on a 750GB TiVo Series3. The standard Series3 comes with a 250GB drive, and DVRUpgrade sells pre-expanded units with larger drives. Still, it isn’t exactly cheap – the standard price is $1,199, so this brings it down to ‘only’ $1,099. Enter the coupon code ‘TEAPARTY2007′ when checking out to get the discount. Don’t forget to enter the code.

Includes free shipping, and limit one per customer with the discount. Somehow I don’t think that will be a big problem.

TiVo changes their relationship with TiVo Greater China

In a new SEC filing, TiVo revealed that they’ve changed their relationship with TiVo Greater China (TGC):

On June 28, 2007, we exercised provisions in our license agreement with TGC, Inc. that ended TGC’s exclusive rights to use certain aspects of our technology and intellectual property in The People’s Republic of China (China), Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, and The Republic of China (Taiwan). TGC continues to have a non-exclusive license to commercialize the licensed portions of our technology and intellectual property in those countries. As a result, we now have the ability to pursue licensing opportunities through direct relationships with broadcasters, video operators, and other significant media companies in those countries, which can now be structured similarly to our other recently announced international distribution agreements.

It looks like TiVo may be pursuing some direct relationships in these countries, or perhaps they weren’t satisfied with TGC’s progress in bringing TiVo to them. Though TGC has been selling TiVo in Taiwan, as well as Shanghai, China, for a while. And just recently closed another deal to bring TiVo to more cities in China.

TiVo has been getting more aggressive about overseas expansion, which is good. This makes me curious about what else might be in the works.

Panasonic develops 4x Blu-ray burner

Normally the HD DVD / Blu-ray discussion revolves around consumer video products, but we need to keep in mind that both formats are also used for data in PC applications. This is an area BD really shines, with its higher capacity. The new Panasonic drive can write a 25GB single-layer disc in 23 minutes, and a 50GB dual-layer disc in 43 minutes. Panasonic will release 4x 25GB BD-R media this month, with 4x 50GB media to follow in September.

LG also has a 4x BD-R burner, but it only handles single-layer 25GB media. LG is aiming for 6x speeds in their next generation of drive. Note that the ‘x’ multiplier is format specific – the base ’1x’ transfer rate for DVD is about 10Mbps. For HD DVD and BD it is 36Mbps. So 4x BD has transfer rates similar to what 14x DVD would be. We should see more 4x BD-R drives from other vendors soon. I believe HD DVD is still at 2x for the fastest drives.

A new TiVo rebate – up to $170 back

I wanted to highlight something buried in my last entry – TiVo has quietly slipped another rebate out there. The last rebate ended on June 30th, and no new rebates have appeared on the TiVo rebate page. But Amazon has the new rebate, which is good on purchases made between July 1 and July 28, 2007.

The rebate provides for $170 back on purchases of single-tuner Series2 units with model numbers beginning with ’540′ – aka the ‘night light’ units with the white front bezel. It also provides for $150 back on the purchase of the Series2DT (model 649) as well as other single-tuner Series2 units (models 264, 275, 565, 590, and 595). As in the past, the wording on the rebate is confusing as it refers to the latter as the “$150 TiVo Series2 Dual Tuner DVR Rebate”, when most of those models are single tuner.

$15 Unbox credit and free USB WiFi with TiVo S2DT purchase

Hot on the heels of the last special offer, TiVo has another special offer. Purchase an 80-hour S2DT for $99.99 or a 180-hour S2DT for $199.99 from TiVo.com (both $150 off MSRP) and receive a free factory renewed (aka refurbished) TiVo USB WiFi adapter (a $39.99 value) and an additional $15 instant discount at checkout. (Which the offers words as“to be used toward movie downloads on Amazon Unbox on TiVo.” But it looks like your on the honor system to use it thusly.) So the total savings is $204.99.

The offer includes free shipping and, like all new TiVo purchases, requires product activation. The offer is good through July 23, 2007.

It’s a decent offer. You might save a bit buying a refurbished S2DT. Amazon is selling the 80-hour S2DT for $227.99 and the 180-hour S2DT for $298.88 There is a $150 rebate available on both, bringing the prices down to $77.99 and $148.88, respectively. (Note, the Amazon product pages currently list the rebate as $170. This is wrong! I’ve already emailed them about that.) The TiVo WiFi adapter sells for $41.88, so the total costs are lower through the TiVo special. Though, if you plan to use Ethernet and not WiFi, it is cheaper to just buy the box from Amazon, or the refurb deal.

As always, TiVo Rewards Referrals are appreciated.

I spotted the deal via TiVoBlog.com.
