Some potential good news for MythTV users

Last month Zap2It Labs dropped a bombshell on the free DVR user community when they announced they’d be discontinuing their free guide data service. This service has notably been key to the use of MythTV, and without it MythTV users would’ve been reduced to screen-scraping websites or going back to time/channel based recordings.

Well, it looks like they may be getting a reprieve. No, Z2L hasn’t changed their mind, but there is a new group looking to fill their shoes: Schedules Direct. There isn’t much information yet, but it looks like they’re working on providing a solution before Z2L turns off their service on September 1st. It appears to be a community driven effort – this is their board:

Isaac Richards, Chairman (MythTV)
Robert Eden (XMLTV)
Daniel Kristjansson (MythTV)
Kevin Odorczyk (MacProgGuide)
Chris Petersen (Mythtv)

More chips in the HD DVD facade

Paramount, one of two major studios on the fence (the other is Warner), releasing both formats, seems to be leaning toward Blu-ray with some of their newer released. They’ve begun to take advantage of Blu-ray’s capacity advantage over HD DVD. On August 28th, Blades of Glory will be their first title with a lossless/uncompressed soundtrack, with PCM 5.1 – only on BD. The HD DVD release won’t get it. Two weeks later Face/Off gets high-definition extras – again, only on BD. The HD DVD release won’t – apparently due to the lack of room.

The recent Flags of Our Fathers release also saw a high bitrate AVC encode on the Blu-ray version.

This is a switch from the early days when Paramount would give HD DVD VC-1 encodes and Dolby Digital Plus audio, while they dumped the same title on BD in MPEG-2 with just Dolby Digital. It looks like they’re really starting to treat Blu-ray right, and use the advantages the format brings to provide superior releases.

And Optimum Home Entertainment, a UK distributor that was formerly in the HD DVD camp, announced Blu-ray releases of Wold Creek, Pan’s Labyrinth, and The Host due November 12th. So they’re now supporting both formats.

A lot of HD DVD fans have said how none of these announcements mean the end for HD DVD, and I agree. Just because Blockbuster went Blu doesn’t mean the end. Or just because BJ’s Wholesale Club or Woolworths won’t be selling HD DVD. But all of these stuff adds up. More and more we’re seeing retailers pulling back from HD DVD, if not directly embracing BD exclusively. And more and more content providers and studios are announcing Blu-ray exclusivity – and we’re not seeing that for HD DVD. Now we have a former HD DVD exclusive vendor adding BD. Most people still shop, and rent, in stores – and I say that as a geek that buys just about everything online and has for years. Online rentals are a small part of the market. ‘E-tail’ doesn’t even come close to retail. So the ‘it is still available on the web’ argument is really quite weak.

Death by a thousand cuts is still death. HD DVD needs to die so we can put an end to this war and heal the split in the market.

Amazon Unbox $.99 sale – and free movie downloads

I think I forgot to post about last weekend’s sale – sorry, things were hectic preparing the TiVo HD review and I had to head back to NY for the weekend for my Dad’s retirement party. So I just lost it in the shuffle.

This week’s Amazon Unbox 99-cent sale includes The Astronaut Farmer, The Bourne Supremacy, Let’s Go to Prison, Blade Runner, Catch and Release, and The NeverEnding Story.

If you have never seen Blade Runner, what’s wrong with you? you really should. I’m looking forward to the super-ultra-deluxe edition hitting Blu-ray this fall. The Bourne Ultimatum, the third film in the trilogy, hits theaters next week, so you can catch Supremacy, the second film, to prepare.

I think I may check out The Astronaut Farmer, it looked like a quirky movie, and I’m an aerospace geek (be glad I refrain from posting on that here), so I may as well for a buck. :-)

And here’s something interesting – a *free* movie to *own*. El Callejon de los Milagros, the most awarded film in Mexican history, is up with a price of $0.00 for purchase. I don’t know if that’s a promo or a goof – but it just let me buy it for nothing. (Thanks BCBlog.)

EDIT: And another free movie, Inspiracion.

If you find more free movies leave a comment. :-)

BD’s Wholesale Club? More Blu-ray news

Is this a growing trend? Video Business is reporting that BJ’s Wholesale Club is going exclusively Blu-ray in all 170 store. BJ’s will no longer stock HD DVDs in their stores, only BD. Both formats will continue to be sold on their website.

And there is also a report that Woolworths in the UK will also go Blu-ray exclusively in their stores – while continuing to sell HD DVD on the web.

Two more small studios are going BD exclusively. Razor Digital is going BD and releasing four IMAX titles in November. Questar is also reportedly going BD.

Denon, a big name in high-end A/V gear, has jumped into the high-def player market with an announcement of two Blu-ray systems, the DVD-3800BDCI and DVD-2500BTCI. These are extremely expensive, high-end systems – so they’re not going to sell a lot of these. But Denon is an influential brand that caters to serious audio/videophiles.

You just don’t see studios and retailers announcing HD DVD exclusivity.

Blu-ray Leads Adoption of Next-Generation DVD Players in the U.S.

Spin spin spin… Parks Associates has done a study on the adoption of the next generation of discs (meaning BD and HD DVD) and they feel that BD is pulling ahead.

“However, we are starting to see the pendulum swing slowly in one direction,” said Roden. “Recent retail developments, support from major Hollywood studios, and inclusion of the format in the PlayStation 3 puts the Blu-ray format in the lead.”
