Schedule TiVo recordings from Zap2it.com

Well, I don’t know how long this has been up there, but I just discovered that Zap2it.com allows scheduling recordings on your TiVos, just as Yahoo! TV, AOL, and TiVo.com do. First you need to link your Zap2it account with your TiVo account, then you can use the little TiVo guy icon that appears in show listings to schedule the recordings. See the Zap2it TiVo page for more information.

The LA Times chimes in on the format war, and Sony launches four BD recorders in Japan

I saw this article the other day, but I’ve had some personal stuff to deal with and didn’t get around to blogging about it. On Monday the LA Times ran an article about the BD/HD DVD format war which is mostly things we’ve seen before, but has some interesting bits. They cover the basics of the war, Blu-ray’s 2:1 sales lead, the PS3 advantage, the $150 million payoff to Paramount and DreamWorks Animation to go HD DVD exclusive, etc. But then it dropped this:

The brinkmanship is intensifying. Another major studio, Warner Bros., is being courted by both camps and believed to be mulling over a lucrative offer that could bring such popular titles as “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” into the HD DVD camp, according to Hollywood insiders who requested anonymity because the talks were confidential.

It isn’t too surprising, but this is the first report I can recall seeing that explicitly states that both sides are trying to ‘incentivize’ Warner into backing them. Warner is a big dog in both camps accounting for 20.82% of BD sales (second only to Sony’s 25.26%) and 30.11% of HD DVD sales (second only to Universal’s 41.58%). If Warner picked sides it would be a big loss to whichever format they drop, and a huge win for the camp they back. (Paramount has been only 10.24% of BD and 11.11% of HD DVD sales to date – not nearly as key as Warner, especially for HD DVD.) Since Warner is a much larger fish than Paramount, it will presumably take a lot more to hook them. Right now they’re making money sitting on the fence, selling to both sides. And they have their ‘Total HD’ combination disc in their back pocket. Based on sales alone, the logical choice would be Blu-ray – their release of 300 has sold 2:1 in favor of BD, as have most of their dual-format releases. But there is certainly a lot of back room negotiation and politicking going on, and probably a lot of money being offered by both sides.

But that’s not all, the article goes on to state:

What’s more, Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the dominant seller of DVDs, has been contemplating whether to boot stand-alone HD DVD players from its shelves in favor of Blu-ray. Wal-Mart executives would not talk about the company’s conversations with suppliers, but said it would continue to carry hardware and software in both formats until consumers indicate a clear preference.

Nonetheless, they expressed frustration with the continued format race.

“It would be good for the studios or somebody to make the call,” said Kevin O’Conner, Wal-Mart’s vice president and general merchandise manager for consumer electronics.

If that contemplation is true, it is doubly interesting. First, that Wal*Mart is considering picking sides in the first place. Second, and perhaps mostly, that they’d side with Blu-ray. Now, as a Blu-ray supporter I would love them to do this. But, to date, most speculation has been on if Wal*Mart would back HD DVD or not. The presumption has been that since Wal*Mart is largely cost driven, they’d support the format with the current lowest prices on players. And, additionally, since Wal*Mart sources many items from China, and China is in the HD DVD camp (via CH-DVD), it seemed logical. I think this is the first time I’ve seen someone suggest Wal*Mart is considering backing BD.

I don’t think this war is going to be over any time soon.

In other news, Sony announced four new Blu-ray Disc recorders for the Japanese market. The new recorders, which go on sale November 8, support 50GB BR-R/RE discs for recording up to 16 hours of HD. The top-end unit includes a 500GB hard drive (it is a combo DVR/BD recorder). Sony is mulling over launching recorders in the European market as well.

I suspect the US market is lagging because of the complexities of dealing with CableCARD and Cable Labs on a recorder.

Both CNET News.com and Forbes covered the news.

Australians to get high-def TiVo – but no ad skipping

Well, this is a good news, bad news situation. According to iTWire, the Australian TiVo due for release in early 2008 will be based on the TiVo HD recently released in the US. No big surprise there, I was expecting that the TiVo HD would be the reference platform for any new boxes developed in the immediate future. However, there is also this:

Australians won’t enjoy the ad-skipping features found in US TiVo, confirms Phil Dobbie – chief marketing officer of engin, an Australian consumer VoIP provider part owned by the Seven television network. Seven will sell TiVo in Australia next year through engin, to be available before the Beijing Olympics in August.

“Australians will be able to fast forward through ads, but not totally skip. It will be a fast scan – you should be able to get through an ad break in 30 seconds,” Dobbie says.

Now, I’m not sure exactly what they mean. The US TiVos don’t have any real ‘ad-skipping features’. The closest thing I can think of is the not-so-secret 30-second skip back-door code. Other than that, US users simply have fast-forward – as apparently the Australians will have. So this could mean that the Australian software will disable the 30-second skip back-door – or it might just be meaningless hot air referring to non-existent ‘ad-skipping features’. Though I tend to think it means the former.

They do confirm that the Australian units, like the US model, will be able to use a WiFi adapter for broadband connectivity, in addition to the built-in Ethernet port. Unlike the US model, the Australian model will not work with cable television – just DVB-T broadcasts. Seven is “still wavering” on the size of the hard drive. (The US TiVo HD has 160GB.) Just as US units can have recordings scheduled from TiVo.com and Yahoo! TV, the Australian units will support scheduling recordings from TiVo.com.au and Yahoo! Australia. Australian pricing has yet to be finalized, according to Dobbie:

“I think economies of scale mean it will probably be a little bit higher here, but we’ll look at the market when we launch. It isn’t the intention that it will be priced at a premium, we do intend that it will be comparable with other PVRs.”

Good news on the whole.

New $200 rebate on the TiVo Series3

Yesterday I posted about a rumored $200 rebate on the Series3, but I was waiting for information from TiVo. Well, I never did hear back from TiVo, but Lou Jacob of DVRupgrade.com was kind enough to send me the PDF of the rebate form.

It is a $200 mail-in rebate on the TiVo Series3 – this is only the original Series3 and not the TiVo HD. Purchase the Series3 between September 16th, 2007 and January 26th, 2008. The rebate must be postmarked by March 26th, 2008. So the rebate kicks in this Sunday – if you’re thinking of buying a Series3, hold off a few days more.

With the Series3 available for $600, or less, from a few online retailers, that brings the cost down below $400, putting it about $100 more than the TiVo HD. That’s not a bad deal for what you get – 250GB instead of 160GB, the Glo remote, and the nicer design of the unit itself.

EDIT: The rebate went live on Sunday. To support the site you can purchase a Series3 via these links from DVRupgrade.com (including expanded units), Amazon.com, Buy.com, or BestBuy.com.

And if you plan to connect any TiVo using WiFi, be sure to pick up the TiVo Wireless G USB Network Adapter.

If you pick up a new TiVo, using TiVo Lovers as your TiVo Rewards referrer is always appreciated.
