90,000 HD DVD players sold last week, cheaper BD players coming, and BD+ cracked

Video Business is reporting that, with all of the sub-$100 promos, over 90,000 HD DVD players were sold last week – mostly the Toshiba HD-A2 (which was the primary model on sale). (Via EngadgetHD)

High-Def Digest cites Sony Electronics president Stan Glasgow as sating that he expects Sony’s standalone Blu-ray players to drop 20%, or more, to around $399 for the holidays. But he says not to expect prices to drop much below that -at least not this year. (That is MSRP of course, so you’d probably see them for less from online retailers.) Glasgow also indicated that a firmware update would be made available for some existing Sony Blu-ray players to enable some Profile 1.1 (aka ‘Bonus View‘) features. I’d have to say he means the PS3, don’t know about any of the others. (Via EngadgetHD)

And finally, confirming previous reports, SlySoft’s new AnyDVD 6.1.9.6 beta is capable of copying Blu-ray titles protected with BD+, at least for now. We’ll see if the BDA responds with updates to plug the hole – that’s supposedly something BD+ is designed for. (Via – wait for it – EngadgetHD)

Monsoon Multimedia Announces HAVA Titanium HD

Monsoon has released another HAVA variant – the HAVA Titanium HD. It seems to be an updated version of the HAVA Platinum HD, with the addition of USB ports. They also bundle a USB 802.11g WiFi adapter with the unit – which seems kind of a waste for those who don’t need WiFi. I think they should sell the adapter separately so those who don’t need it can save a few bucks. It also obsoletes the HAVA Wireless HD, which is basically a HAVA Platinum HD with built-in 11g WiFi.

The advantage to the Titanium is the two USB ports which can be used for 11g today, but they’re also talking about offering an 11n dongle in the future. (I’ve said before that decoupling WiFi, as TiVo and Sling have done, makes sense because of evolving standards.) And they’re also saying they’ll be offering a USB hard drive add-on in the future that will allow users to turn the HAVA Titanium HD into a standalone DVR. Right now you can record on a Windows PC using the HAVA as a network tuner. And we may see a USB TV tuner to allow the unit to directly tune (and record) OTA TV. (Since the unit only has two USB 2.0 ports, either you’re going to need a USB hub or decide which two devices you want – WiFi, drive, or tuner – if they release all of these.)

This does look like an improvement over their existing products, but it still has the major limitation HAVA has always had – it only works with Windows. You need a Windows PC or a Windows Mobile device – no Macs, no Palm OS, no Symbian, etc. Those users still have Sling Media of course.

Here’s the press release:

A deal on the PS3 – from Dell?

Yep, Dell is offering a deal on the PS3. You get the new 40GB PS3 for the same $399.99 you’d pay elsewhere, and it includes the Spider-man 3 Blu-ray as elsewhere, but the Dell deal also includes the game Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction and a 6′ HDMI cable.

Time is running out on lifetime transfers – and the TiVo HD is just 35,000 rewards points

First of all – tomorrow, Thursday. November 8, 2007, is the last day to take advantage of the lifetime transfer offer on the TiVo HD. You must purchase your TiVo HD by tomorrow, and then complete the lifetime transfer by December 8. 2007. This offer may never be repeated, so keep that in mind. Remember that people are reporting that TiVo is honoring transfers on retail units, such as from DVRupgrade.

Also, TiVo has reduced the points cost of the TiVo HD from 50,000 to 35,000 in the TiVo Rewards program. So if you’ve been saving up points for a TiVo HD, the bar just got lower – 7 referrals instead of 10. (And if you activate a new TiVo and don’t have a friend to give the points to, they’re always appreciated.)

Thanks to TiVo Blog for the pointer.
