WeaKnees.com Deals On TiVo With Product Lifetime Service

WeaKnees Logo WeaKnees.com has TiVo Series1, Series2, and Series3 units available already with product lifetime service. They have both the original TiVo Series3 and the TiVo HD (the second Series3 model) upgraded with 500GB drives for 70 hours of HD recording with lifetime service, for $399.99. Note that product lifetime service alone is $499 for new subscribers and $399 for existing TiVo subscribers – plus the cost of the hardware. The new 500GB TiVo Premiere model lists for $149.99. So if you don’t care about the features unique to the TiVo Premiere (HD UI, Hulu Plus, etc.) this is a good deal for a unit ready to run.

Note that the original Series3 (TCD648250) requires two CableCARDs – S-Cards or M-Cards. While the TiVo HD (TCD652160) can utilize a single M-Card. Depending on what your cable company charges for CableCARDs this may or may not be a factor in your decision. The original S3 has the fancy OLED front panel display and the Glo remote, while the TiVo HD has the basic LED indicator lights and a non-Glo remote.

They also have the older Series1 and Series2 units with internal analog tuners and support for external set top boxes, both single-tuner ($299.99) and dual-tuner ($349.99) models. They even have Pioneer TiVo Series2 DVD combo units ($399.99). These units are available in 40GB (single-tuner) or 80GB (dual-tuner & DVD) base models, or upgraded to 80GB ($19.00 S2), 500GB ($99.00 S2 – $149.00 DVD), or 1TB ($149.00 S2 – $199.00 DVD).

The real old-school Series1 units are available in Philips ($199.99) or Sony ($249.99) models, both with 40GB. Upgrades to 80GB ($19.00) or 120GB ($39.00) are available. While I could see some reasons to buy the Series2 units, I really can’t see why someone would want one of the Series1 units these days. Maybe someone really into TiVo hacking with the old TiVoWeb and the like, but even then I doubt it.

All of these units have been refurbished and tested by WeaKnees, and they come with a six month parts and labor warranty. Quantities are limited, so grab one now if you’re interested.

Sellout.Woot! – Galaxy Tab 10.1″ Android Tablet & SD Card Reader Just $299.99

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 w SD Card Reader Today Sellout.Woot! has a great deal – a refurbished Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1″ Android Tablet with an SD Card Reader for only $299.99 + $5 S&H. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is one of the first generation of Android tablets, and is often called the best of that generation with it’s slim & light design. It sports a 10.1″ 1280×800 display, dual-core 1GHz Tegra 2 CPU, 1GB RAM, 16GB of on board storage, dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, 3MP rear camera with LED flash, 2MP front camer, and more. And it is running Android 3.1 Honeycomb.

One of the drawbacks of the thin design is that, to achieve it, Samsung left off any expansion capabilities – but this deal includes the Samsung SD Card reader accessory that supports SDHC cards up to 32GB, along with a microSD adapter to use your microSD cards with the reader.

MSRP on the tablet is $499.99, and Amazon sells them for $448.00. The Galaxy Tab SD Card Reader MSRP is $19.99 and Amazon’s price is $14.11. So the $299.99 price for both is a very good deal. This is still one of the best Android tablets on the market, and you’re getting it at a substantial discount.

Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II Video Round Up

Lockheed Martin Logo Over the past month or so Lockheed Martin has released a number of videos highlighting progress on the F-35 Lightning II program. This first video is a look back at the accomplishments made in 2011:

They were pitching the F-35 to potential customers at the Singapore Airshow in February:

They made the first flights of the F-35B with external stores, including external stores pylons, inert AIM-9X Sidewinder middles, and a centerline 25mm gun pod. And before you comment, yes, carrying external stores destroys stealth. The F-35, and F-22, can operate with internal stores only for ‘first day of the war’, all-up stealth. But once air defenses have been suppressed, or in uncontested environments, carrying stores externally allows the aircraft to carry more ordinance to accomplish more on a given mission. They’re also used for external tanks for ferry flights, etc.

And the Marines celebrated the arrival of the F-35B, and the USAF the first flight of the F-35A, at Eglin AFB in Florida:

The US Navy’s Naval Air Systems Command also released their own 2011 Year In Review video:

As well as one commemorating the first flight of an F-35C for the UK:

And, just because, here’s a bonus video of F-16s from the 149th Fighter Wing of the Texas Air National Guard out of Lackland AFB in San Antonio:

NextGen Flight Services – The Future Of Air Traffic Control

Lockheed Martin Logo I recently posted about the future of air traffic control and all of the improvements that are in the pipeline. The updates to our air traffic control systems will have far reaching effects – increasing airspace and airport capacity, reducing fuel burn and greenhouse gas emissions, decreasing noise for airport neighbors, etc. – all while making flying safer. I went on a bit in that post about these systems.

Well, I’m still catching up a bit on some of my RSS feeds from my honeymoon last month and one of those feeds is Lockheed Martin’s YouTube channel, where I discovered they’ve posted several videos that nicely explain these improvements. They cover NextGen Flight Services, which is the name for the FAA’s plans to upgrade the US air traffic control system. I think these videos are easy to understand and really do a good job in explaining the benefits.

I’m amused by how closely these videos match what I wrote in my earlier post.
