Alpha and Omega

I admit this is only tangentially gizmo related, though the Space Shuttle is one hell of a gizmo. But this was just too good not to share, and I thought my audience would appreciate it too.

Chris Bray and his father were there on April 12, 1981 for the launch of STS-1, and they took a photo.

30 years later they were back for the launch of STS-135 on July 8, 2011. And they recreated the photo.

The first, and the last.

USB CableCARD Tuners Readying For Launch

CableCARD Maybe it is due to the new FCC CableCARD & Tuning Adapter rules going into effect August 1st, but it seems like vendors are lining up their USB CableCARD tuner products for launch in the near future.

MissingRemote reports that the Hauppauge WinTV-DCR-2650 dual-tuner USB CableCARD box has passed CableLabs certification and will sell for just $129. Pre-orders start Monday, and it will ship in late June.

Also shipping in late June, the SiliconDust HD HomeRun PRIME will come in two models. The HDHR3-CC is a three tuner box selling for $249.99, while the HDHR3-6CC-3X2 is a six tuner box selling for $499.99. Both are available for pre-order now.

Still a bit more nebulous Ceton Corp, which recently finally shipped their much anticipated InfiniTV 4 internal quad-tuner CableCARD card, also announced a InfiniTV 4 USB model back at CES. Given that they’ve finally started shipping the internal model, and the competition is about to ship their USB tuners, I have to expect this will see the light of day sometime soon.

Just in time to take advantage of the newly updated tuning adapters. I’m sure PC-based DVR enthusiasts will line up for these products if they deliver on their promises.

A Sign of the Times? A Spam Filter for Phone Calls

Google Logo I’m a pretty dedicated Google user. I switched to Google as my main search engine not long after they first launched (from Lycos, which I’d used since it launched (and the mascot was a Wolf Spider, family Lycosidae, hence the name of the site!)). Last year I switched to Chrome from Firefox (I’d been a Netscape/Mozilla user from Navigator 0.9 on). I use Picasa for photos, YouTube for videos, and Docs for, well, my documents. My domains are hosted on Google Apps, so I can handle all of my email through Gmail. I use Feedburner and Analytics for this site (and AdSense if I can get the account fixed), and I read my RSS feeds in Google Reader. I use an Android phone, which is loaded with Google apps (Maps is my GPS). Google Talk is my preferred IM. So, yeah, I like what they have to offer. :-)

(I’d be using +1 and Google+ if only they’d get around to giving Google Apps accounts Google Profiles – which are required to use those features. C’mon, Google!)

Of course, I also use Google Voice, and that’s the number I give out to everyone these days. I really love it, especially the ability to send & receive SMS messages and manage my voice mail right from my Chrome browser with the Google Voice extension. And, of course, it effectively gives me unlimited SMS on my phone since it uses the data connection, not the SMS plan. It has a nice feature set.

But the reason for the post is a new addition they just made. There is now a Spam Filter in Google Voice! I have mixed feelings on that. On the one hand, I think it is a nifty feature and I enabled it right away. On the other, the very fact that we may need a spam filter for our phones is kind of depressing, isn’t it?

If you go into Google Voice and then the Calls tab, down at the bottom you’ll see:

Global Spam Filtering Send calls and text messages from numbers identified as spam by Google directly to the Spam folder

As help explains:

These calls, text messages, and voicemails will not be forwarded to your phones, and will automatically be placed in your spam folder.

Basically it works just like you’d expect, just like the spam filters in Gmail do. I thought that was pretty neat, neat enough to share.

It also got me thinking. I wonder if they’ll someday offer filtering like they do in Gmail, being able to sort different numbers/contacts into different folders/tags. Sending some numbers right to voicemail. I do some advanced stuff with Gmail filters. (That might be another post at some point.) I know about Groups, but the options are limited. Voice is just another form of data after all. It’ll be interesting to see what is yet to come.

The Rise and Fall of RIM – An Interesting Look Inside

RIM Logo

RIM was the dominant force in mobile devices for corporate users, and an early leader in smartphones in general – until iPhone and Android started eating their lunch… and breakfast… and dinner… and snacks… you get the picture. RIM has been steadily and consistently losing market share to the benefit of Apple’s iPhone and the Android Army. The recently launched PlayBook has been widely panned in reviews. They’ve pushed the Blackberry Bold 9900 back from the summer to the fall. They apparently cancelled the planned 10-inch PlayBook to speed up moving their phones from the legacy Blackberry OS to the QNX-based OS of the PlayBook. And employees have started publishing open letters critical of the company.

Boy Genius Report has an exclusive look inside RIM, which highlights the roots of their troubles. It sounds like the issue is really that Mike Lazaridis, one of the co-founders and co-CEO, while brilliant, doesn’t really understand the changes in the market and what consumers really want – and too much of the control of RIM rests solely with him. It is an interesting article, and it doesn’t paint a pretty picture of RIM’s future prospects. I recommend checking it out.
