Letting Your Inner Couch Potato Go Out to Play

A growing number of software programs make this transfer possible, primarily TiVoToGo, a free service for TiVo subscribers. Right now, TiVoToGo works to transfer TV shows to personal computers, DVD’s, and media players like the one owned by Sydney Sheppard that support Microsoft’s mobile video format. During the first quarter this year, though, TiVo is expected to offer TiVoToGo software that works with video iPods and Sony PlayStation Portables, expanding the number of people who can have portable versions of shows.

There is an article in today’s NY Times about mobile video, and a large part of the article is related to TiVoToGo. The author also interviewed Dave Zatz, of ZatzNotFunny.

Digital Playground Chooses Blu-ray

Digital Playground has become the first adult studio to take a firm stand in the DVD format war. The company said today it will release its next-generation products on Blu-ray Disc instead of rival HD-DVD.

So the adult vendors have started to take sides.

TiVo CEO & President Tom Rogers Webcast

A few days ago, TiVo’s CEO & President, Tom Rogers, spoke at the 16th Annual Entertainment, Media and Telecommunications Conference, and his talk is available as a webcast.

He talks about some of the opportunities and challenges facing TiVo, worth listening too.

Gear Live TiVo Series3 video interview

Gear Live did a video interview with TiVoPony demonstrating the Series3 in the TiVo suite at CES. They cover the same info I posted the other day, but it gives you a nice view of the UI features and some of the changes for dual-tuner and HD support. They also show the TiVo 11g adapter. The video is about 12 minutes long and worth checking out.

Thanks for the mention TiVoPony. :-)

And thanks to PVRWire for the heads up.

BusinessWeek Online: Changing Channels

With TiVo’s base of lovesick customers — who say they refuse to live without the service — why can’t it turn a profit?

The article isn’t as negative as that may make it sound. I think it is fair coverage of the advantages and challenges facing TiVo.

A DVD combo? Don’t hold your breath

For consumers, a device that could play both HD DVDs and Blu-ray discs would take a lot of risk out of adopting the new video players–but one may not arrive for a while.

I strongly suggest the ‘SMALL’ versions. :-)

Thanks to TiVo Blog for the heads up.

TiVo Unveils New Series3 Video Recorder

TiVo unveiled the first working prototype of its upcoming CableCard-capable digital video recorder here at the Consumer Electronics Show. The new Series3 HD DVR will be the first non-DirecTV TiVo to record HD, and the first ever with CableCard functionality, which lets it record and playback encrypted digital cable broadcasts.

The Series3 is starting to hit the press, though there are some things in this article which contradict what I was told by the TiVo reps I spoke to. The unit does have a 250GB drive (though that could change before it finally ships, and it is possible that, like the Series2, there could be different models), but the capacity is up to 300 hours of SD and 30 hours of HD, not 250/25.

The article says this unit will not support MRV – but I was told by more than one TiVo rep that they do plan to support MRV, TTG, etc.
