More Studio Woes For HD DVD While Microsoft Hedges

The Warner announcement seems to have started the snowball rolling down the mountain, and it is picking up more studios as it goes.

New Line has not only announced that they’re going Blu-ray exclusive, but it is effective immediately. All of their announced future HD DVD releases have been canceled. And their sole existing HD DVD release, Pan’s Labyrinth, will cease manufacturing and once existing stocks are depleted it will no longer be available. Via High-Def Digest.

Digital Playground, an adult film studio which only recently went neutral from being HD DVD exclusive has decided to fully back Blu-ray along with HD DVD on all of their high-def releases“until there is a clear-cut winner” according to a statement made before Warner’s announcement. One has to wonder if, in light of the announcement, they might consider Blu-ray a ‘clear-cut winner’ at this point. CE Pro via EngadgetHD.

And the Times Online out of the UK is reporting that as many as 20 of the studios that are part of the HD DVD Promotion group are looking to have their names removed from the roll.

Pony Canyon, a major Japanese music, animation and film studio and part of the giant Fuji Television media empire, said that although it was currently part of the HD-DVD Promotion Group, the decisions of US studios meant it would “choose Blu-Ray in the end”.

Several other Japanese firms – including content producers and electronics component makers – said that their support of HD DVD was “under review” and that they knew of many others in the same position. Others, who admitted that they had previously been waiting for “clear market momentum”, said that it had now probably arrived.

I think we’ll be seeing more HD DVD studios going neutral, as well as out-right defections by both HD DVD and neutral studios to the Blu camp now, especially if Paramount returns to being neutral – definitely if they go fully Blu. At this point any party who really wants to end the war should throw their weight behind Blu-ray. If studios, retailers, rental chains, etc, shunned HD DVD it would be hastened to its end. Times Online via AnimeOnDVD.

While this is happening, Microsoft seems to be hedging their bets with respect to the Xbox 360. They seem to be softening a bit toward the idea of the Xbox 360 supporting Blu-ray via an add-on drive:

“It should be consumer choice; and if that’s the way they vote, that’s something we’ll have to consider,” Albert Penello, group marketing manager for Xbox hardware, said when asked whether Microsoft would support a Blu-ray DVD accessory in the event that HD DVD failed.

I think they’re setting the stage to hedge their bets in case HD DVD does fail, as is looking likely. They can soften their stance, and then they won’t look as bad if they start supporting Blu-ray. From CNET News.com.

TiVo Reveals More Australian Details

It looks like The Sydney Morning Herald has someone at CES, and they got some time with Joshua Danovitz, TiVo’s international general manager. They managed to get some more specifics on the TiVo service that will launch down under in 2008:

Not only will Australians be able to record all free-to-air television channels using TiVo, they will also have access to a movie download store and about 100 free internet video channels, Joshua Danovitz, TiVo’s international general manager, said at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Danovitz also said that all of the TiVo features available to US users would be made available to Australian users, but it will be up to partner Seven Network to decide the timing.

XStreamHD Details Emerge

Details on the XStreamHD satellite service are emerging here at CES, and it looks to be much more than just a satellite service. The basic system has three components, a Media Server and a Media Receiver, and, of course, the satellite dish. In addition to receiving HD content via satellite, in resolutions up to full 1080p with 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, it also functions as an OTA DVR with three ATSC tuners. And it turns out it is a hybrid service. Newer titles will be delivered via satellite – but older, or, as they say ‘vintage’, titles may be delivered via broadband.

The content is stored in the Media Server and is distributed through the home via Ethernet, up to GigE. The client device can be the XStreamHD Media Receiver or any DLNA v1.5 enabled device. Up to four devices are supported simultaneously. It seems to use a TiVo Suggestions-like mechanism to learn your preferences to decide which content to automatically store. It does appear to be a cached system, not on demand, so you’d only be able to watch the content already in your ‘Virtual Personal Library’.

The Media Server has two drive bays which will support 500GB and 1TB Segate drives, for up to 2TB of internal storage. And there is an eSATA interface to enable additional, external storage. So capacity doesn’t seem to be an issue, just how much you’re willing to pay. There is also a USB port ‘for MP3 downloads’, which I’ll need to get more details on. Now, this is the weirdest feature:

Includes a feature-rich Personal PBX business-class phone system; also supports VoIP calls and offers free calls between XStreamHD subscribers

I definitely need to get more info on this when I hit their booth tomorrow. That just seems like an odd feature to be included.

The basic solution will be available in 4Q08 for an introductory price of $399. Of course, the value will really depend on the content that is available.

CES is huge, spread across multiple locations. I’ve been at the LVCC so far, XStreamHD (and Sling and others) are at the Sands. I’m planning to spend the day at the Sands tomorrow.

The press release:
