The Next Step For Blu-ray – 3D!

Panasonic is proposing taking Blu-ray into the third dimension with a new standard to bring 3D content into the home. 3D content seems to be the next generation of theatrical productions, with more and more theaters installing systems from companies like RealD, and more films being shot in 3D. I’ve seen several RealD films in my local theater, and I have to say they really look great. A far cry from the old anaglyphic 3D systems with colored glasses.

Of course, the next step is bringing that content home. Several consumer electronics companies are working on systems for 3D in the home. The polarized glasses used in modern theater systems aren’t feasible in the home, they require a polarized image source. The leading candidate right now are LCD shutter glasses which flicker on and off in sync with the on-screen image, providing each eye with its own perspective. With 120Hz refresh screens each eye gets a full 60Hz refresh rate. And there are other systems, including some which provide 3D viewing without any glasses.

But we still need a way to get that 3D content into the home, and that’s where Panasonic’s proposal comes in. What they’re proposing is a modification to Blu-ray to provide 3D playback. And it is based on existing standards with relatively simple modifications. The content would be encoded using an existing two-channel encoding system already included in H.264. Instead of encoding each ‘eye’ individually as two channels, there is one primary channel and the second channel only has to encode the delta, or differences, from the primary. That means instead of 2x the data the result is only about 1.5x as large. Because the primary channel is still a full, viewable 2D version of the content this system could theoretically be backwards compatible. While 3D viewing would require newer, 3D capable players, older Blu-ray players could potentially play back the standard 2D version.

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) is hoping to officially consider the proposal before the end of the year, which could lead to adoption in 2010. 3D content would also require an updated HDMI standard to carry the content to the display, and Panasonic is also considering a proposal for that.

Blockbuster Wants To Top Your Set With Their Box

Well, it looks like Home Media Magazine was right, Blockbuster is releasing their own set-top box. Well, like Netflix partnered with Roku, Blockbuster is partnering with 2Wire. The 2Wire MediaPoint digital media player is currently available for free if you pre-rent 25 movies for $99, or, another way to look at it, is you get the box for $99 with 25 free rentals. So at least they’ve done the right thing in matching Netflix’s pricing.

I didn’t think the Netflix STB would be successful, and frankly I’m still a bit skeptical in the long run, I think the real strong part of their service is their partnerships with TiVo, Samsung, LG, Microsoft, etc. It is a lot easier to sell a service for boxes already in homes then to sell new boxes. Unlike Netflix’s subscription-based service, Blockbuster’s service doesn’t require any subscription, it is strictly pay-per-rental. Which may appeal to those who don’t rent movies often enough to warrant a subscription. Another difference is that the Blockbuster service is a download service, not streaming like Netflix. That means users get full quality, no matter their broadband connection speed. On slower connections the rentals will simply take longer to download. And they can be downloaded in advanced and watched later.

TiVo Is Going Mobile

No, I don’t mean TiVo is doing place-shifting. And no, I’m not referring to TiVoToGo. Or even the remote scheduling deals with Verizon or with RIM for BlackBerry – though those are close. What I am talking about is a new TiVo website aimed at mobile devices, m.tivo.com, available in beta today and available widely in a few weeks.

My personal opinion is that it is about time, and I mean that as supportively as possible. Back when TiVo first introduced online scheduling one of the first things geeks like myself did was try it from our mobile devices – PDAs and smartphones. And the main TiVo website has always been a little iffy on mobile devices, for various reasons. So there has long been a call to make the site work better on mobiles. And then when they launched the Verizon scheduling application it created a renewed call for generic mobile device support via a standards-based mobile-optimized website. So I’m really glad to see this announced, and I look forward to trying it out as soon as it is available.

The new site isn’t just limited to TiVo users, it is open to anyone with a mobile device with an Internet connection and web browser. You can browse TV schedules and search for programs. The descriptions sounds a lot like the functionality in TiVo’s Swivel Search or WishLists. You can search title, actor, director, and keyword – so when your out with friends and you can’t think of the name of that show with that actor you know, you can find it right away. And it also has TiVo’s recommendations engine, used in TiVo Suggestions, to suggest “If you like this, you may also like” entries. And, of course, TiVo owners will be able to then schedule recordings on their TiVo right from the phone.

The press release:
