Blu-ray, HD DVD merger talks scrapped
The two, rival blue-laser optical storage formats, Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD, will not be coming together, Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi admitted yesterday. Well, looks like this means war.

Sanyo Joins Group to Develop High-Def DVDs
Japanese consumer electronics maker Sanyo Electric Co. has joined a group of companies led by So Sanyo has decided to embrace Blu-ray in addition to HD-DVD. Guess they don’t see any unification coming either.

Blu-ray Disk Enters Next-Gen DVD Race
A day after the announcement of a HD DVD-R disk format, Pioneer Corp. and Mitsubishi Kagaku Media Co. Ltd. jointly announced development of write-once disk for the Blu-ray Disc format.

Sony says single standard for new DVDs is `unlikely’
Ken Kutaragi, who helped invent Sony Corp’s PlayStation game console, said creating a single standard for new DVDs that can store more high-definition movies and pictures than current discs is unlikely.
