LG Electronics, one of the world’s biggest optical drive makers, will support HD DVD as well as Blu-ray in the emerging war over the next DVD standard, the company said on Wednesday.

Japanese technology firm Toshiba on Wednesday unveiled the first high-definition laptop computer with an HD DVD optical drive for the new generation of DVD discs and a high-resolution display.

Sony’s blank-disc division will this month begin shipping rewriteable Blu-ray Discs in Europe. Recordable discs will appear in April, the company said. However, dual-layer versions will not surface until later in the year, it added.
