“The Badoop Badoop Show,” affectionately named after TiVo’s unmistakable soundmark, is your fun, fast-paced weekly guide to what’s hot, what’s quirky, and what’s unexpected in the world of entertainment. All topped with great TiVo Tips at the end of each episode.

But I have to warn you, this is not your average entertainment news show. (ET’s got that market down.) Filmed in my real San Francisco living room, we’ll feature some interesting guests and topics, random pop trivia, and kitschy-cool tidbits from around the world of TV.

Thriller: Whether you’re running from a convicted killer to the safety of your houseboat or slowly realizing that you’re a superhero, this list of thriller favorites promises to be hair-raising. But if you plan to laugh, please extinguish your cigar first.

Kids: Need something for the little ghouls and goblins to watch while they’re carving pumpkins? This list of Halloween shows is approved for monsters of all ages.

Bruce Campbell: It’s true: We love Bruce Campbell. Whether he’s playing “Ash” in the “Evil Dead” movies or the king of rock-and-roll himself, Bruce Campbell is everything that’s great about B-movies.

TiVo Tip: You’ve Got Options

As you start scheduling Season Pass™ recordings for all the new fall shows, don’t forget, you’ve got options. Instead of just selecting “Get a Season Pass,” and calling it a year, highlight “Options” and review the default settings. For example:

Who needs repeats?  Opt to select “First run only” and save yourself from the inevitable disappointment of running home to watch your new favorite show only to discover it’s a re-run!

Too much of a good thing.  If you’re recording the nightly news, “Keep at most” comes in handy. You only need 1. After that, even good news is old news.

Play it Safe!  Say you love those premium channel programs, but not how they ignore the hour and half-hour marks, keeping you from watching all of “next week’s previews.” Play it safe and pad the recording. Adjust the “Stop recording” option to be at least five minutes past the scheduled time so you’ll never be left hanging again.

Friends Return:  Jennifer Aniston is currently filming a guest appearance on NBC’s “30 Rock,” reports Associated Press. There were no immediate details on the role Aniston will play — as herself or a fictitious character — or the episode’s planned air date. (David Schwimmer had his guest shot last season.)

Only moments ago, in an attempt to get in a Summer Games sort of mood (Summer Olympics in Beijing commences August 8!), I searched for my favorite Mary Lou Retton moment on… where else? YouTube™ on TiVo!

That’s right—I felt like a gold-medal winner myself, beckoning Mary into my 21st century living room, using just my TiVo remote, and watching her nail perfect 10s on the balance beam, on the vaults and on the floor.

Here’s a Q for U: Name the auto-record feature that finds the best movies ever, every time they’re on, all year round, so you can watch them when you want. A: AFI’s Guru Guide, only on TiVo.

Oh, yeah! Every year, the American Film Institute (AFI)–a national institute that recognizes and celebrates excellence in the art of film & TV–publishes a list you must respect if you’re looking to raise your PC-IQ (Pop Culture Intelligence Quotient). Last year, it gave us the 100 greatest American movies of all time (see TiVo Tip below); this year, AFI covers The 10 Greatest Films from 10 Classic American Genres, aka “The 10 Top 10.” Translation: 100 films–from Epic to Animation to Sci-Fi and more–all of us should see.

And thanks to TiVo, you can enjoy every “winning” title that comes to a TV screen near you, from here on out! If you’re broadband-connected, just get the AFI Guru Guide (see TiVo tip below) and start popping the popcorn. Or, for your online-scheduling pleasure, we’ve queued them up here. SOMETHING BORROWED, SOMETHING BLUE… Have you heard? Hollywood is bringing the adventures of “The Smurfs” to life in a feature film that will introduce the lil’ blue cartoon creatures to a new generation of fans! It will be a hybrid live-action and animated film. Hmmm… who will be Gargamel?

WHO’S GOT GAME? With the increasing popularity of YouTube clips from Japanese game shows such as “Hole in the Wall” and “Human Tetris,” U.S. networks are bringing similar antics to their prime-time schedules, reports AP. Expect a domestic edition of “Hole in the Wall” to come to Fox this fall, but don’t expect it to be pretty like Price is Right. “There is a great desire to shock over there,” notes executive producer Stuart Krasnow. “Ironically, we’re more puritan over here. But the Japanese will shock to any extreme.”

MTV WANTS YOU: The MTV Video Music Awards (you know, the awards show where Britney Spears–oops!–didn’t do it for fans last year!) will return to Los Angeles on September 7 after a decade of city hopping from NYC, Miami, and Las Vegas. Perhaps they’re hoping for some Hollywood magic: While viewership was up to 7.1 million from 5.8 million the year before, the numbers are a far cry from the record 12 million viewers for the 1999 version.

Shanan Says… What to Watch this Summer

Don’t lament the loss of your favorite series this summer. Add these perhaps new-to-you titles to your list of Season Pass(R) recordings, and I promise you’ll feel cooler just knowing you’ve got great TV taste.

Mad Men:
AMCTV is currently replaying Season 1 in its entirety; catch this retro-kitschy-cool series before Season 2 starts this summer. Expect gorgeousness all-around in set and design and the narrative will keep you wound as tight as the girdles worn by those 1960 gals. Oh, the details!

This American Life:
A reason to get Showtime. Ear + eye candy on TV. Plus, charming host Ira Glass is also a huge TiVo fan, so what’s not to love about this radio-turned-video star’s graceful foray into the (HD)TV waves that serves up slices of Americana in the form of satisfying stories about life in these 50 states + 1 D.C.

Flight of the Conchords:
It was “business time,” all right, when HBO had the smarts to pick up this hilarious folk’ish duo. They harmonize with those of us who don’t take life (or ourselves) too seriously. In fact, this could be my reason to move to New Zealand and take TiVo with me, mwhahahah!

As we gear up for the year’s most anticipated red-carpet event on February 24th–the 80th Annual Academy Awards presentation, 5 p.m. PT on ABC–my recommendation is that you stock up on plenty of red-hearts and red vines, because there is a lot of award-winning entertainment that is bound to get your heart racing during the shortest month of year. And that’s not including my own birthday on the 26th, ha!

While hopefully Hollywood will start showing those poor industry writers some true love, I’ve managed to dig up some great TV options to keep you rapt through the winter’s rain and snow, including a little something to tickle every fancy (and probably fetish, too) both in the world of television and film.

Speaking of love and devotion, the History Channel’s “Modern Marvels: 90s Tech” will be covering technologies we just can’t live without on Thursday, February 7th. You probably won’t have to PAUSE long to realize something you intimately know made the cut. So schedule a recording and get ready for your heart to fast-forward a few beats.

TiVo Tip: Get ‘em on the Couch

Cupid has been keeping busy so you can browse the TiVo St. Valentine’s Guru Guides either online or from the coziest corner of your couch (From Find Programs, select Guru Guide Recommendations), all in the name of making hearts sing (or let’s be frank: sometime they bleed, because romantic love can be oh-so-tragic in its classic Hollywood form). Remember: With one click, you can record a guide in its entirety or schedule just your favorite programs one by one.

Which guide will pack your Now Playing List with plenty of TV to love? Depends on whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day with a lover, friends, or family, naturally!

A Kiss, A Sigh, and The Picture that Captured It All

Just recently, I ran all over a town that’s famous for keeping hearts with a very handsome (albeit, little) man to show my fellow TiVo lovers, just how romantic (not to mention unbelievably easy) it can be to put your friends and family on TV using TiVo’s latest and greatest feature, Photos & Slideshows.

And just in time, because now you have a unique way to make your loved one’s heart melt on February 14th when you upload your favorite “couple shots” to Photobucket or Picasa™ Web Albums and leave a trail of rose petals leading to the new, most beautiful photo-frame in the house, which happens to be your TV, rotating through the slideshow of your creative making. Ah, LOVE!

Bonus Tip: With the ability to upload any .jpg images to online photo sharing services, don’t forget you can even create your own image in the form of words that may or may not be in the form of, hmmm, how shall I say this… a pop-worthy question, perhaps?

By the way, Robby’s idea of a romantic movie is Office Space, but he’s awfully nice about staying in the room when I watch the Jane Austen movies on PBS. On our Season Pass list is The Office (American and British versions), Amazing Race, Survivor, Deadliest Catch, Reaper, Buffy reruns, and Oprah (and Robby says to say, “Hockey,” too!).

Letter From the Editor

Right now, I’m knee-deep in both Consumers and Electronics at what always feels like the largest trade show on the planet: the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. But even as we’re demonstrating some of our latest and greatest broadband features, I find myself inspired by the whole TiVo experience – not just a single feature – that moves so many of you to be part of this incredible community.

Remember the TiVo experience that began when you first plugged in your brand-new TiVo® DVR and that fun animation played, starring our very own TV superhero-mascot? Oh, wait… Did you say you just got TiVo as a gift and haven’t even hooked it up yet? Well, first things first, then: Welcome! If you’ve yet to get connected, we’ll hook you up: These step-by-step videos walk you through every connection, including how to connect to broadband at home for access to even more features. Easy!

And for you TiVo veterans ready to relive that magical moment, here’s a colorful “Easter Egg” you can crack all year round: Press the TiVo button followed by the number 0 to replay the beloved intro “movie” any time. WARNING: Kids love this tip.

Oooh, and if you haven’t (yet!) seen the opening animation exclusive to the TiVo HD DVR, I’ve posted it for your viewing pleasure (it’s playing a lot here at CES). However, I must be very clear: While you’ll surely get a taste of its fun-factor, this piece will send you over the moon when viewed on a High-Definition Television. Wow-wee!

Try it yourself now with your broadband-connected TiVo DVR and watch as your TV transforms into the best photo frame you’ve ever seen. Here’s how:

• From TiVo Central, select Music, Photos, Products, & More > Photos & Slideshows.
• Enter your lucky (key)word and TiVo will search amongst the thousands of photos publicly shared by talented photographers from around the world.
• Use the arrow keys to browse albums. Select and view photos individually or create your own custom slideshow using your favorite photographs.

Of course, you can also sign in to your own Photobucket or Picasa account to view your own pretty pics. Or find your friends’ and family’s photos, by searching for their Photobucket or Picasa user/screen name.

I have had a cable company DVR for over a year, but finally made the switch to the new TiVo HD DVR and the difference is amazing. The response to commands, the accuracy of programming, and the picture quality of the TiVo box are all superior. We love our new HD TiVo box and are now addicted to HD video. In fact, we were watching something in standard video the other evening and had trouble with the “fuzzy” picture.

Now, with your broadband-connected TiVo DVR, you can easily access two premier online photo-sharing services—Photobucket and Picasa Web Albums—with one peanut-shaped remote!

This incredible tip, then, is dedicated both to the people who take the pictures and the ones who like to view them. Here’s a fast, easy, and FUN way to make the most of all the memories you’re making this holiday season: Display them using the best digital frame in your house – your TV!

1. If you take digital pictures, create a (free!) account with Photobucket or Picasa Web Albums (or if you already have one, great!). It’s easy to upload and organize your favorites.
2. From TiVo Central, select Music, Photos, Products, & More > Photos & Slideshows.
3. To view your own photos, sign in to your Photobucket or Picasa account.
   To view your friends’ and family’s photos, search by their Photobucket or Picasa user/screen name (just ask your snap-happy friends what it is).
   To touch, move, or just be surprised, search by keyword for a few of your favorite things: Raindrops, Roses, Whiskers, Kittens, you-name-it. TiVo will automatically find matches from the thousands of publicly shared photos taken by photographers you’ve never met. It’s really incredible fun!
4. Browse albums using the arrow keys. You can select and view photos individually or create your own custom slideshow using your favorite photographs.

WARNING: If you’re lucky enough to have a TiVo HD DVR, digital photos look particularly magnificent on those seductive 16:9 screens. An HDTV with TiVo is clearly the 21st century’s version of modern wall art—a frame for whatever visual image you might be in the mood for, whenever that mood strikes. Seriously, my TiVo family: Try this feature – you will love it.
