Apologies to Samsung, RIM Is The Real Jackass

On Friday I posted about a marketing stunt outside an Apple Store in Sydney, Australia that pretty much the entire net believed was staged by, or on behalf of, Samsung. The general reaction, including my own, was that it was a pretty dickish stunt – rude, annoying, and disruptive, and that Samsung was better than that.

Well, actually, Samsung is better than that, since they had nothing to do with it. It turns out the stunt was staged by, of all companies, RIM – as uncovered by Macworld. And RIM fessed up once it was uncovered:

UPDATE: RIM Australia issued a statement this morning, May 1 9:20 AM AEST, with Richelle Gillett, Account Director from Spectrum Communications for Blackberry confirming:
“We can confirm that the Australian ‘Wake Up’ campaign, which involves a series of experiential activities taking place across Sydney and Melbourne, was created by RIM Australia. A reveal will take place on May 7th that will aim to provoke conversation on what ‘being in business’ means to Australians.”

I don’t know what is sadder – the idiotic stunt itself, all of the free publicity RIM effectively bought for Samsung (with more to come as updates, like this one, get posted), or that it seems RIM wasn’t even considered as a possible culprit in the PR stunt. When you think of companies staging social media stunts, RIM just isn’t the company that comes to mind. They just aren’t considered ‘cool’.

It reminds me of the old OS/2 Warp ads in which IBM tried so desperately to seem cool. As my best friend once put it some years ago: “It’s like watching your grandfather breakdance, seeing a company like Honda or IBM try to Get Down Verbally. You don’t know whether to be mortified or just afraid he’ll break a hip.”

Way to go RIM.

Samsung Implies iPhone Users Are Sheep, But Perhaps Goes To Far In Australia

Samsung has a long history of needling iPhone users through their ads, and it is generally fairly amusing. Even iPhone users find them funny if they have a sense of humor about the more extreme fanatics. They’re still at it with their teaser video for the upcoming Samsung Mobile Unpacked 2012 event, being held in London on May 3rd.

The end of the video displays this text progressively: “With technology that fits in this easily, you can now stand out from… …everyone else.” And when it displays “everyone else” the video shows a pen full of white sheep ‘baa’ing. While they never call out Apple or the iPhone, given the history of their rivalry I think it is clear who that is aimed at.

So that’s all well and good, a little jab at the competition. But they also apparently arranged another stunt at an Apple Store in Sydney, Australia as part of a pseudo-viral “Wake Up” campaign that seems to be designed to drum up interest in advance of the Galaxy S III launch. (And here I am writing about it, so I guess it is working.) The website wake-up-australia.com.au is just a large countdown timer. There have been incidents of “Wake Up” popping up around Sydney – on billboards, in a pool, etc.

But this time a couple of large black buses pulled up outside of the Apple Store in Sydney and disgorged a horde of black clad ‘protesters’ who held black placards emblazoned with “Wake Up”. They then proceeded to chant loudly outside of the store, blocking the sidewalk and generally creating a disturbance. And a local blogger caught it on video:

Frankly I think this is way over the line, and just completely dickish behavior. That goes beyond good natured ribbing and is just harassment of the Apple Store employees and customers. And the general public who had to deal with the obstruction and disturbance. All to drum up attention. But this is like a toddler throwing a tantrum to make everyone pay attention to them. Samsung – you’re better than that, cut this crap out.

TiVo Updates iOS Apps, Android App Update And Tablet App On The Way

TiVo has released version 1.9 of their iOS app for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, and it is available in the App Store. It brings a number of nice enhancements to the app.

Now, just to get this out of the way, the Android app is slated to get these features in ‘summer’. And the long-awaited Android tablet app should finally arrive in ‘spring’. TiVo, please, release one Android app that runs on all Android devices – the Android SDK supports it. It is silly when we get multiple apps for different devices. So, my fellow Android users, be patient.

One of the most notable changes is the new Browse UI:

There’s also a lot more usability to the app when you’re away from home. For S4 users you can see and modify My Shows, the To Do List, and the Season Pass Manager. S3 users can view (but not modify) their To Do List, and view & modify their Season Pass Manager.

You can also now create a WishList Search from within the app. And when you re-order you Season Passes you can continue to use the app without waiting for the list to finish re-prioritizing. And all of the images in the app are now ‘retina’ quality, just in time for the new iPad. Here’s the complete list of improvements:

Popular iOS App i.TV Now Available for Android

For a while now i.TV has been available only for iOS devices, but now it is available for Android devices as well. The Android version looks like it is lagging behind the iOS version a little bit in features, but that’s not really surprising. It most likely means they started porting the app to Android based off of an earlier iOS release, and the iOS app has simply continued to receive updates while the initital Android development was ongoing. I’d expect the Android app to catch up in time as updates are released, now that the initial version is out there.

The list of features includes:

Local TV listings based on your service provider (US and Canada)
TiVo DVR remote scheduling
Netflix search interface: Miss an episode of your favorite show? i.TV helps you find it on Netflix
Netflix controls: add shows to your Netflix disc and instant queue
Bookmark feature for favorite shows
Entertainment news that updates in real-time and filters by favorite shows
IMDb and Wikipedia: one-touch direct access to show information on both
Smart Lists, such as New Shows and Emmy Winners

The app is available for free from both the Android Market and the Amazon Appstore.

Judging from the screenshots it looks like the app has native support for both phone and tablet screen layouts and resolutions.

While the last round of deals included a link for the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer the link never seemed to work. The deal was only available in stores. I managed to grab one as a gift for someone else. I was still up at 4am Friday so I ran over to my local Best Buy. Since I relaunched this site in July do you know what the most popular post has been? The Woot! deal on the Samsung Galaxy S 8GB Wi-Fi from just over a week ago. I’ve been getting more hits each day from people searching the web for it, so it seems there is a little bit of pent up demand.

Well, this post should make those users happy. Both the Samsung Galaxy 4.0 and Samsung Galaxy 5.0 are slated for US release on October 16th and Amazon has both models up for pre-order. The two models share most of their specs: Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread, a 1GHz S5P-C111 CPU, 800×480 displays, front VGA and rear 3.2MP (with auto-focus & flash) cameras, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP & AVRCP, 8GB of internal storage, microSD for up to 32GB of additional storage, built-in speaker & mic, and an FM radio tuner. Supported video codecs include DivX, XviD, H.264, H.263, MPEG4, WMV, & RM/RMVB (up to 480×320) and audio codecs include MP3, AAC, ACC+, e-AAC+, AMR, MIDI, & WAV. Basically the Samsung Galaxy Players (as they’re known) are to the Samsung Galaxy S smartphones what the iPod Touch is to the iPhone. The same basic platform with all the features, but without the phone.

The Samsung Galaxy 4.0, pictured above to the left, is listed for $229.99. It has a 4″ 800×480 display (if you couldn’t figure that out from the name) and a 1200 mAh battery which is good for roughly 36 hours of music or 5 hours of video playback). Overall it measures 2.43″ x 4.87″ x 0.39″ and weighs 4.27 ounces.

The Samsung Galaxy 5.0, pictured above to the right, is listed for $269.99. It has a 5″ 800×480 display (natch) and a 2500 mAh battery for approximately 60 hours of music or 8 hours of video playback. It measures 3.08″ x 5.56″ x 0.47″ and weighs in at 6.42 ounces.

By way of comparison the iPod Touch 4th generation has a 3.5″ 960×640 screen, supports up to 40 hours of audio or 7 hours of video playback, and measures 0.3″ x 2.3″ x 4.4″ with a weight of 3.5 ounces. The Samsung Galaxy Player offers several things the iPod Touch does not: a larger screen, expandable storage (via microSD), an FM tuner, and the battery is replaceable on the 4.0 (built-in on the 5.0). And you have full access to the Android Market over WiFi for apps.

Here are the original spec sheets for both players. It seems they’ve been updated a bit for the US release, notably the Android version.

Virgin Media Announces TiVo iPad App for the UK

TiVo released their iPad app for US users back in January and updated it in July when they released their iPhone & iPod Touch version. Virgin Media also released an iPhone app in July. But now they’ve finally announced a version of the iPad app for the UK as well. Unfortunately, it isn’t being released just yet. It is tied to a “major software update” rolling out “in the coming months”. However, earlier Virgin Media specified October as the time frame for “the second drop” of software, so that seems to be a logical time to expect to see the iPad app as well.

From the press release the app sounds like a clone of the US app with a few tweaks to reflect the unique aspects of Virgin Media’s service. The images below are from the release.

Amazon Back-to-School Gaming Event

Amazon knows what students really need when going back to school – games. And so they’re holding a Back-to-School Event with deals on all many of gaming goods. (Why not just call it a sale? Why Event? *shrug*) It is a fairly extensive sale, with 129 items to choose from, split into three categories. There’s Back to School, with 79 items, apparently aimed at the younger crowd. Then Back to College, with 49 items, for the more mature gaming audience. And Accessories, which is just the PlayStation Move Motion Controller and Navigation Controller. The games are for PS2, PS3, XBox 360, Wii, DS, 3DS, and maybe others I didn’t notice.
