href="http://www.gizmolovers.com/2008/12/29/tivocast-has-the-answers-answerstv-health-that-is/">my last TiVoCast post there have been a number of changes. For some reason they’ve dropped the groups for KoldCast content that had been there. So now all of the KoldCast shows are listed individually. When this happened it also seems to have dropped all my Season Passes, so if you were signed up for any you might want to check on yours. The shows broken out now are After Judgment, Crusty Demons, duder, Gemini Rising, Let It Be Heard, Poor Paul, The In-Betweens of Holly Malone, The Sexually, and TV Face.

New KoldCast shows added to the lineup are Average Betty and In The Can. According to a KoldCast press release there are more shows coming to TiVoCast: The Crew, The Hayley Project, Invention with Brian Forbes, and Miles & Ben. More details are in the release.

Also joining the TiVoCast lineup, and not from KoldCast are Entertainment Weekly and National Geographic Channel.

Unfortunately, it looks like jPod was dropped from the TheWB.com shows available via TiVoCast. Shame, I really enjoyed that one.

With all of these shoes you can →

I can’t believe an entire week passed since my last post, well, until the wave of posts I just made. After being offline for three days I was behind on everything, just as things got very busy with work. I’m running three beta programs for Sling, two of which end today (announcement pending) and the third is the BlackBerry beta – which you may have seen that we’re going to public beta on 12/30. It has been one thing after another and the next thing I knew a week had passed…

And during that week TiVo has added a bunch of content to TiVoCast. Let’s dive right in.

Beauty TV describes themselves as:

Welcome to Beauty TV®, the world’s only 24/7 Beauty TV Network and soon a daily syndicated TV show. In order to launch The Beauty TV Network (BTVN), the company has assembled a team with former professionals from the beauty, technology & film industry, Sony, “E!” and EXTRA.

Subscribe online or on your TiVo via TiVo Central -> Video on Demand -> Browse free videos -> All -> Beauty TV

Beyond the Trailer is from Indy Mogul, which has had its own TiVoCast channel since August, 2007. BTT’s blurb is:

First impressions are important – but they can also be deceiving! Nobody sells quite like Hollywood. That’s why it’s important to go “Beyond The Trailer”! Host Grace Randolph covers industry expectations, behind the scenes gossip, and audience reactions so you get the ultimate profile on the latest movies.

Subscribe online or on your TiVo via TiVo Central -> Video on Demand -> Browse free videos -> All -> Beyond the Trailer

KoldCast also joined the lineup, after the news broke earlier this month. KoldCast describes themselves, in part, thusly:

KoldCast is seriously selective about entertainment programming. While YouTube-style videos are often entertaining, and you’ll see some of the very best here, we are confident that you’ll also enjoy watching the very best shows, movies, extreme sports, comedy, music, and no-BS news, all produced at the next level.

KoldCast adds a number of channels to TiVoCast. KoldCast Action Sports currently has one channel. TiVo Central -> Video on Demand -> Browse free videos -> All -> KoldCast Action Sports

KoldCast Comedy has four sub-channels: duder, The In-Betweens of Holly Malone, Poor Paul, and The Sexually. Oddly, the entire KoldCast Comedy lineup seems to be missing from the TiVoCast web page, so you’ll have to sign up on the TiVo: TiVo Central -> Video on Demand -> Browse free videos -> All -> KoldCast Comedy

KoldCast Music currently has two sub-channels, Let It Be Heard and Gemini Rising. TiVo Central -> Video on Demand -> Browse free videos -> All -> KoldCast Music

KoldCast SciFi and Horror also has two sub-channels, TV Face and After Judgment. TiVo Central -> Video on Demand -> Browse free videos -> All -> KoldCast SciFi and Horror (BTW, TiVo has misspelled it as ‘After Judgement’ both online and on the TiVo interface.)

MommyCast is a departure from the above:

MommyCast.com is a unique online audio company by and for women immersed in the fullness of motherhood and life, “holding the world together, one child at a time.”©
MommyCast.com is first and foremost about moms and motherhood, and our shows offer great interviews with thought leaders on the subjects of:
• community
• health issues
• new products for the home
• travel
• food and nutrition
• technology and new music: MommyCast Music Show
• education
• helpful hints, shortcuts and diversions.

So very much not for me. I’m a single guy who doesn’t want kids, and isn’t a big fan of them in general in anything by small doses. But I have friends with kids and TiVo who may be interested.

Subscribe online or on your TiVo via TiVo Central -> Video on Demand -> Browse free videos -> All -> MommyCast

And that’s what has been added this week. Looking back at last week’s post I’ve watched the four available episodes of jPod -and I quite like it. I’m looking forward to more downloads. I looked it up, looks like it is a failed TV series out of Canada with 13 episodes total.

truTV is still limited to just REHAB for content, I wonder when we’ll start to see more content as promised.

I noticed the aspect ratio on some of the podcasts this week seemed to be improved, but I’m still seeing too much 16:9 content squished into 4:3 encodes. Like I said last week, I know full-screen 16:9 encodes are possible, some podcasts do it right, so let’s see more of it. All of the Revision3 shows are 16:9 and nicely encoded – but they’re completely windowboxed, full-screen would be nice.

Also, it looks like 3 Minute Ad Age was glitching again. For most of the week I got two of every episode, but at the end of the week it seemed to correct itself. Hopefully that will stick.

TiVoCast Lands New Content

Broadband

TiVo

ComplexVideo.com

jPod

MOTORZ

TheWB.com

TiVoCast
<guid

I live in Worcester, MA, specifically in the Greendale neighborhood, one of the areas hardest hit by the recent ice storm. I lost power around 02:00 Friday and got it back around 18:00 Sunday, so I’m still playing catch-up with work and things in general. Getting back into it now…

So anyway, sometime in the past few days it looks like TiVo has added some new content to TiVoCast. First up, ComplexVideo.com. This entry is actually a menu unto itself with five individual channels:

Hot Complex

* Hilarious Pop Culture Parodies
* Offbeat Skits With Rappers and Celebrities
* Insider Analysis Of Men’s Style, From Designer Profiles To Sneaker Tips

ComplexVideo.com is part of the Complex Media Network, which describes itself as:

COMPLEX MEDIA NETWORK is the premier online destination for the most influential 20-something male consumers. This discerning audience is driven by style, sports, music, games, gear and girls. The Complex Media Network reaches these style-makers and trend-spreaders through its uniquely credible and authentic viewpoint into all things Complex.

Subscribe online or on your TiVo via TiVo Central -> Video on Demand -> Browse free videos -> All -> ComplexVideo.com

Next up is MOTORZ, which self-describes as:

MOTORZ (pronounced “motors”) is the DIY show for automotive enthusiasts who love to work on their rides. Host Chris Duke shows you how to install aftermarket products step-by-step in layman’s terms, in a typical garage setting, using common tools.

I’m kind of disturbed that they felt their name needed a pronunciation guide. How else would you say it? Motor-Zee? (Or Motor-Zed for some of you.) Like Mazinger Z?

Subscribe online or on your TiVo via TiVo Central -> Video on Demand -> Browse free videos -> All -> MOTORZ

And, finally, TheWB.com has added another channel to their selection, jPod.

Based on Douglas Coupland’s bestseller, jPod follows Ethan Jarlewski and his video game programmer friends as they work in the bowels of Neotronic Arts, all while battling with new bosses, marijuana-farming parents, old exes and more.

This is a full-length episode series. There are four episodes up now and each is roughly 46 minutes long, about the same as the show content in an hour of broadcast television. I like to see this, I’d love to see more full-length content available via broadband subscriptions on TiVo. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to subscribe to a series on Hulu and have it download automatically to be waiting on your TiVo?

Subscribe online or on your TiVo via TiVo Central -> Video on Demand -> Browse free videos -> All -> TheWB.com -> jPod

While I’m talking about TiVoCast, I have a pet peeve. Some of the TiVoCasts have figured out full-screen 16:9 encoding very nicely. For example, Fast Lane Daily. It plays, as-is, full screen on my 16:9 HDTV. Some other TiVoCasts have gotten the 16:9 thing down, but don’t seem to know how to encode for full screen – pretty much everything from Revision3 is in this category. It is annoying, but it still looks pretty good.

But then there are some who are obviously shooting in 16:9, but are encoding in 4:3! So by default everything looks squished in from the sides. DL.TV does this. And, worst of all, TiVo’s own The Badoop Badoop Show does this! C’mon guys, this is your own system! It is clearly possibly to encode things well for the Series3 & TiVo HD users, Fast Lane Daily does it. TiVo’s own TiVoCast channels should be the reference quality standard. And, honestly, while I enjoy the content, they just don’t look very good. Not only is the aspect ratio wrong (yes, you can use ‘Full’ aspect on the TiVo to stretch it back out, but you shouldn’t have to) but the encoding looks like you’re literally using your YouTube encode on the TiVo.

I’d still like to see true HD TiVoCast content, but a nice first-step would be to encode 16:9 full screen – like FLD does.

KoldCast TV Coming To TiVoCast

Broadband

TiVo

KoldCast TV

TiVoCast

Tubefilter News
<guid

This is a new program sponsored by Mattel’s Barbie described simply as:

Amy Poehler and Friends celebrate girls who are changing the world by being themselves.

Yes, that’s Saturday Night Live’s Amy Poehler. It seems aimed at younger girls, the ones they interview seem to be around 10 years of age. It looks like a positive program, a long way from Barbie’s “Math class is tough!” days. I mentioned The Badoop Badoop Show when it launched on YouTube last month. It is a short-form entertainment program hosted by TiVoShanan.

Since its inception, the Emmy® award-winning TiVo service has changed the way millions of people watch TV. And coming soon: the “The Badoop Badoop Show,” a quirky show to keep you in the entertainment know with TiVo recommendations every week on what to watch, hear, download and more. This is not your average entertainment news show. And yes! The show is named after one of TiVo’s unmistakable soundmarks: Badoop-Badoop!

At the time I said I wished it would come to TiVoCast – and here it is! <a

Check out our favorite clips each week for a sample of the Best of Video Downloads.

<a

It looks like a channel for all of the TiVo ‘feature’ videos they’ve done, introducing various features like music playback or photo viewing.

Learn more about the latest TiVo features and how to get the most from your TiVo experience.

<a

Nice to see that whatever the problem was it has finally been resolved.

On the not-so-nice side, I signed up for the new 3 Minute Ad Age TiVoCast and got deluged. Ten episodes downloaded (I set mine to Keep At Most 10), I watched and deleted them – and ten more came in. I watched and deleted those. And ten more came in. All told I think thirty episodes came in. It looks like they went live with a backlog and they were all marked as new. So beware.

And on a different note, after my laptop post last week I finally pulled the trigger and bought a new one. Why? I found a coupon for $500 off good through 9/22. That was about 1/3 off, too good to pass up.

3 Minute Ad Age Joins TiVoCast

Broadband

TiVo

3 Minute Ad Age

Advertisng Age

TiVoCast

I posted earlier today, TiVo is teaming up with Entertainment Weekly.

Fromm their press release:

Entertainment Weekly’s ‘What to Watch’ TV recommendations will now be even easier to access, as the TiVo® service will automatically record the suggested programs. As a result, broadband enabled TiVo subscribers are guaranteed to always have the best programs available to watch whenever they turn on the TV set. The service is expected to launch this fall.

In addition, TiVo subscribers will be able to download Entertainment Weekly video content on the TiVo service, allowing viewers to enjoy EW.com’s original programs such as “Just a Minute,” “Ausiello TV,” “Idolatry,” and behind the scenes video from photo shoots.

It sounds pretty much exactly like the Chicago Tribune deal, a combination of an Entertainment Weekly Guru Guide and TiVoCast(s). This deal will probably result in more exposure for TiVo as EW’s audience is a lot more focused than the Tribune’s.

Though I think they might be laying it on a wee bit thick:

This unprecedented partnership allows two powerful properties to work together to create a more seamless television viewing experience for their respective audiences. TiVo chose Entertainment Weekly to be their trusted voice, and together, they are bridging the gap between Entertainment Weekly readers and all television viewers using the TiVo service. This truly holistic solution maximizes the service EW offers its audience with the innovation and ease of the TiVo service.

An ‘unprecedented partnership’ and a ‘truly holistic solution’? Really? TiVo, I love you pal, but I think that’s a little much for a marketing arrangement with some Guru Guides and TiVoCasts. <img

A good deal, but not warranting such effusiveness.

Howcast Expands On TiVoCast

TiVo

Howcast

TiVoCast

Stephen Mack let me know via a comment that the issue where you can get stuck with a Wine Library TV TiVoCast subscription has been fixed. I’ve confirmed that it shows up and I was able to unsubscribe. So you can now check out Wine Library TV without fear of being trapped.

However, over the weekend I tripped over another bug, this one in TiVo Web Video. Before Systm was in TiVoCast I subscribed to it through TiVo Web Video. But while other Rev3 shows, like popSiren, are still in the Web Video list, Systm was dropped – apparently around the time it was added to TiVoCast. But it remained in my local config files in TiVo Desktop, and the only way to unsubscribe is via the on-TiVo list. So without it there it was a similar situation – stuck with the subscription. Fortunately I’m geeky enough that I manually edited the RSS feed and WSPC XML files in TiVo Desktop to kill it myself.

I renew my call for a local UI in TiVo Desktop to manage your RSS fees for TiVo Web Video. Right now the way I believe it is meant to work is that if TiVo drops a show from the TiVo Web Video list any users who subscribed to it will have their subscriptions killed automatically. (In my case I’m guessing some bug in TiVo Desktop caused it not to delete the subscription, putting me into the weird state where I couldn’t unsubscribe. At least it is better than TiVo Desktop wiping out the entire file by itself, which I’ve had happen three times now.) But that’s not very nice. You subscribe to a feed and you’re happy, but at some point in the future the episodes stop showing up. You might not notice at first, and then you’re missing your show. I think they should leave the existing subscriptions in place, which they could do if there were a UI in TiVo Desktop to allow users to unsubscribe later.

The UI should, of course, also allow users to add feed URLs that aren’t in TiVo’s pre-approved list. It is really quite silly that you need a separate RSS feed reader and then have to have TiVo Desktop ‘watch’ the folder for ‘unapproved’ feeds, when TiVo Desktop has everything required to handle it natively – except the UI to add and remove feeds. So you have to leave two server applications running on your PC all the time for want of a simple UI in TiVo Desktop.

I’m also having issues TiVoCast and TiVo Web Video. My Series3 has rebooted several times in the past couple of days (it just rebooted while I was writing this post, which is what reminded me) and it seems directly related to broadband video. Every time I’ve seen it happen the blue light was on just before the reboot, and in the Recording History there is a failed transfer with a spurious reason such as “was not found on the source” for TiVo Web Video, when I can see the file is there. And it’ll generally successfully transfer the same thing later. I’m getting a number of errors in Recording History, and there seems to be a trend for several to occur in a row – then a reboot. And, oddly, when the unit comes back the blue light often lights up – but there is no sign of a transfer happening. Not in the Now Playing List, nor in the To Do List. And when that happens it almost always reboots again before too long. So something is clearly amiss.

I’m just not having a lot of tech luck lately. The drive in my Series2 DVR-810H died a couple of days ago after 4.5 years of service, going out with a very loud Click of Death. It was the 80GB factory drive, so I’m replacing it with a 750GB drive from DVRupgrade. It costs a little more than imaging my own drive, but I’m really busy these days and it is worth it to me not to have yet another thing to find time to do. And today an external USB drive I use with my laptop stopped showing up. Still spinning, so maybe it is the enclosure, but then again it is also pretty hot to the touch, so it may be dead. Fortunately it was shows I’d saved via TiVoToGo, which while annoying to lose isn’t a crushing blow, and backups of other drives. So nothing mission critical. (I coincidentally ordered another drive the other day, so I guess that’ll be a replacement.) I’m still troubleshooting this one. I’d be happy if nothing else failed on me in the near future.

My S3 just rebooted again, as expected. And now the blue LED is off, so hopefully it will be up for a while this time.

Stuck With A TiVoCast Wine Library TV Subscription

TiVo

TiVoCast

Wine Library TV
<guid

So you can set up a Season Pass for Wine Library TV online, but not on your TiVo. You know what you can’t do? Cancel it.

It didn’t occur to me last night, but the only place to cancel a TiVoCast Season Pass is through Find Programs & Downloads -> Download TV, Movies, & Web Video -> Browse Other Videos. You can’t cancel it from within a downloaded episode and you can’t cancel it online. I realized this because I signed up for it yesterday to make sure it worked before posting. But I’m really not into wine, at all, and I quickly decided the show wasn’t for me, so I went looking for a way to cancel the Season Pass. Oops.

So beware, if you sign up for Wine Library TV (again, don’t confuse it with Wine Library Reserve) you’ll be stuck with the Season Pass until TiVo gets around to fixing things so that it shows up in the TiVoCast list on the TiVo itself. In the meantime if you don’t like it you’ll be stuck deleting new episodes once they download. I hope TiVo fixes this soon.

iFanboy, PixelPerfect, popSiren, Scam School, The Digg Reel, XLR8R TV, and Wine Library TV (Kind Of) Join TiVoCast

Broadband

TiVo

iFanboy

PixelPerfect

popSiren

Revision3

Scam School

The Digg Reel

TiVoCast

Wine Library TV

XLR8R TV

way back to yesterday when I said Wine Library TV was listed on the website with a broken link and not showing up on the TiVo at all? Well, they’ve half fixed that. Now it is listed correctly on the TiVoCast web page so you can subscribe there, but it still isn’t showing up on the TiVo. They’ll probably fix that eventually. Again, not to be confused with Wine Library Reserve.

Subscribe online, but not yet on your TiVo. Eventually it should show up under Find Programs & Downloads -> Download TV, Movies, & Web Video -> Browse Other Videos -> All -> Wine Library TV

One odd thing I noticed, the listings are sorted differently on the TiVo and on the TiVoCast web page. For example, on the TiVo ‘The Digg Reel’ is sorted under ‘T’, but on the web page it is under ‘D’. Similarly The Gourmet Channel is under ‘T’ on the TiVo and ‘G’ on the web. The New York Times is under ‘T’ on TiVo, and ‘N’ on the web. Notice a trend? Same pattern for The Watcher on TiVo and The Weather Channel. Of course, The Totally Rad Show is under ‘T’ on both, but sorted differently – ‘h’ vs. ‘o’. Looks like the website ignores the leading ‘The’ and the TiVo does not.

Here’s something else odd. We known GeekBrief.TV hasn’t been delivering new episodes for TiVoCast for about a month for some reason, but I noticed that while it is correctly listed as GeekBrief.TV on the TiVo, on the web it is hiding as PodShowTV, which is the old name for the site that hosts GBTV, now called Mevio. And there are more oddities. Alaska Podshow, Fit Life, and The Masthead with Marie Claire are all listed on the TiVo, but not the web. They’re all PodShowTV/Mevio programs. I suspect the problem is that the ‘PodShowTV’ entry on the website is supposed to be a sub-list of all of the programs, much the same as The New York Times, instead of just a listing for GeekBrief.TV. Looks like someone broke the website.

So this covers nearly all of the Revision3 shows, just a few left. Best Of… is perhaps redundant, but it could be a nice sampler for people looking to check things out. The GigaOm Show is currently on hiatus, so perhaps that’s why it has not been added, but I’d still like to have it added so I can be sure to subscribe for when it returns. The Revision3 Gazette also seems to be on hiatus, or perhaps dropped. Web Drifter I’m pretty sure has ended, despite still being in the active list on the site. So it looks like the only currently active show not carried by TiVo is ‘Best Of…’.

I’m really happy to see TiVo adding all of this content to TiVoCast, I hope they keep it up.
