TiVo To Partner With Entertainment Weekly

Reuters is reporting that TiVo will partner with Entertainment Weekly, allowing TiVo subscribers to records programs suggested by the magazine’s staff. TiVo is expected to announce the deal later today (Wednesday), likely before their financial conference call in the afternoon. This sounds much like TiVo’s existing deal with the Chicago Tribune. It will probably be an Entertainment Weekly Guru Guide.

TiVo’s “partnering” with Entertainment Weekly pretty much sounds like another Guru Guide. These things have pretty limited value in my opinion – both as a customer and in evaluating the cross-marketing potential. If Guru Guides evolve to the point where customers can share recommendations with friends, I’d be more interested…

It looks like the deal also includes new TiVoCasts too.

  3. Brian Purcell Says:

As Dave said, until there’s user created Guru Guides, these type of news releases are a waste of time. Why do I care what Entertainment Weekly thinks I should watch?

  4. Swingpwayer Says:

You may not care what EW thinks you should watch, but a lot of people do read the mag or go online to check
out their recommendations (including me) and I often find I like the same stuff that they do. For me, this sounds
like a great way to save time going online and manually setting up a recording.

On the flip side, it’s also another ready vector for payola, which I’m sure content providers are happy to see. :)

  6. Dave Zatz Says:

As far as I know, NO Guru Guides or TiVoCasts result in money changing hands. Purely a cross-marketing kinda dealio. Of course this one could be different, but I don’t know.
