The Samsung Galaxy Nexus Now Just $99.99 At Amazon

Galaxy Nexus three view The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is currently king of the Android hill and the flagship phone for Verizon Wireless. It has a 4.65-inch HD Super AMOLED 720p display, a dual-core 1.2GHz CPU, 32GB of storage, a 5MP camera that shoots 1080p video, 4G LTE speed, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC, and plenty more. And all of that running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the most advanced Android version. It is a sweet, sweet gizmo – I have one. But one thing it normally isn’t is inexpensive.

The normal rate through Verizon is $299.99 with a two-year commitment. But Amazon Wireless is now offering this top-end phone at a low-end price, just $99.99 for new subscribers with a two-year commitment. If you want to add a line to an existing family account it is just $179.99. And even those renewing can save with a $259.99 price. If you’ve been thinking about switching to Android and/or Verizon, this is a fantastic deal. Big savings on a killer phone. I’m extremely happy with mine.

In other Android news, my Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime arrived Tuesday. I haven’t had a lot of time to play with it, but so far I love it. I’m planning to take it on my extended trip starting next week, for my wedding and honeymoon, instead of my laptop.

    People should be aware of how big this thing is.  If you’re not a large person yourself, go to a Verizon store and take a look.  If they don’t have one, look at the Morotola Droid RAZR.  Its a little bigger than that.

    Mega, what did you think about the display?  I wasn’t too impressed.  That pentile thing is just too visible to me.  A friend went from a Motorola Droid RAZR that has a BEAUTIFUL display to the Nexus for the obvious reasons (long term updates guaranteed unlike Motorola’s lackluster update commitments) and I’m not impressed with the Nexus display at all.

      My fiancee has a RAZR and it does have a nice display, but a lower resolution.  I don’t notice the pentile thing at all really.  I have to look very closely at the display to notice any pixels, it has a very fine dot pitch.  And the AMOLED display is great outdoors in sunlight.

      It is a larger phone – I haven’t found it to be an issue, but I’m also 6’6″ and a pretty big guy with large hands, so I’m perhaps not the best one to judge. :-)

      The RAZR would be my second choice phone right now I think, though there are a couple of new ICS phones hitting soon that will give the G-Nex a run for its money.  If Motorola would bring the RAZR HD to the US then THAT would be tough competitor for me.  That’s the model they sell in China with the 720p display and higher resolution camera (13MP?  I forget off hand.)  The RAZR MAXX is OK for those who need longer battery life, but that’s all it is – a RAZR with more battery.

      Does the G-Nex have the best display on the market today – probably not.  But I think it is one of the best even if it is pentile.  Some people may be more sensitive to it – like DLP TVs where some people always see rainbows while most don’t.

    What do you think of the hinge/docking arrangement?  I’ve never seen one in person, but it looks like it mates really easily and solidly, but its hard to tell from pictures. 

    To me, this may be the future–tablets that can be both tablets and replace laptops as well.  But it depends on this sort of small detail.

      It is very solid, both the Transformer and Transformer Prime.  They do say not to pick it up and carry it around by the tablet with the keyboard attached.  I can see that, it hangs the weight of the keyboard from the latches instead of cupping the weight of the tablet in the hinge, but that’s probably how you’d carry it anyway.

      It is a little more top heavy than most laptops, since it has more in the top part, but it isn’t a problem that I notice.  It isn’t like it is very ‘tippy’ or anything.

      Not too many comments so far other than it is very responsive and it looks great.  I’ve played some Shadowgun and Angry Birds and they look good and respond well.  I’ve also played with Gmail and a few other ‘productivity’ apps and I’m still getting used to the tablet-unique aspects, but it has been easy and they’ve worked great.

        Yeah I wondered about the whole ‘tippy’ thing.  Obviously for this sort of thing to work with a keyboard, its going to be one of the larger 10″+ tablets, since otherwise the keyboard is going to be too cramped.  And that means the tablet part is going to weigh 1.3 lbs or more (I hope they can figure out how to get this down, they’re still too heavy).  Which means the bottom part needs to weigh that much at least (I think) so it doesn’t fall over when you tip it back.  Which means you get more batteries in the bottom part.  Which is great for laptop battery life, probably 16 hours or something crazy, but also means the whole thing weighs like 2.5 lbs which is too much for tablet use as Microsoft figured out.

        I assume you can charge the keyboard separately, or hook them up and charge them together.  If they keyboard batteries are dead ‘cuz you haven’t been using it, but you plug in a functioning tablet, does the keyboard work? 

        I’m hoping we’ll see some Windows 8 Ultrabooks in this sort of detachable form factor as well.  I assume we will unless all those guys have lost all motivation.

          I don’t find the tablet by itself to be that heavy.  They can make them lighter by using plastic instead of metal – but then you sacrifice strength and rigidity and people complain that the plastic tablets feel ‘weak’ and ‘cheap’.

          You can charge either component independently, and if they’re connected they’ll both charge.  When connected and not on a charger the keyboard battery charges the tablet battery and drains first, so that you always have a charged tablet.  And it’ll run with a drained keyboard as long as the tablet has power, or vice-versa.

          I also like how the keyboard acts as a case for the tablet, protecting the screen.
