New Netgear N900 Wireless Router Offers Extreme Performance

Netgear N900 WNDR4500 WiFi Router Remember the top end Netgear N600 router I reported on just a couple of weeks ago? Forget it, it is obsolete. While the N600 was a dual-band (2.4GHz & 5GHz) router which offered 300Mbps in each band, or 600Mbps today, the N900 is a dual-band router which offers 450Mbps per band, or 900Mbps total. It has all of the features of the N600 and then some. With a faster processor everything is quicker, for example it can transfer content from an attached USB drive up to 30% faster than any other router on the market today.

Pricing for this speed demon is $179.99, and it is available for pre-order now, shipping September 20th.

The N900 has amazing specs but if you are into tweaking your router the N600 you posted about is going to be the next great thing in custom firmware.
There is already an Alpha Tomato and Open-Wrt firmware out there for it.

So if you are into tweaking your firmware then I would go with the N600. If not then the N900 would be the way to go.

I think my previous gen NetGear dual band router is pretty great, but I will warn that it needs rebooting once in a while.  If you need remote access with any frequency you may want to come up with a solution.  I used a simple digital timer for a while to reboot it once a day, though now I use a 3Gstore IP Power Switch, which will reboot it automatically whenever it can’t ping through it.  Very simple and easy to set up, and works 100% reliably.  Course that’s another $99 you’re never going to get back.  I don’t know if there are any routers that are 100% reliable, I certainly haven’t ever run into one.

I hear that the n900 will support scheduled on/off times…

I believe that is only for wireless. You can setup the times that the wireless radio is on.  I guess some people are worried that too much wireless radiation is bad for you.
