TiVo Promotes The Tivo HD XL

I got this email from TiVo today. I rather like the color scheme they’re going with on their TiVo HD XL materials, it looks pretty good.

The email:

Is there some technical impediment to releasing a 1TB version of the MyDVR Expander? I’d love to boost the storage on my tivo hd, but if there’s no way to disconnect an esata drive without erasing all stored programming, I’m not going to take a 500GB baby step.

There’s no technical reason they can’t do a 1TB My DVR Expander, they just haven’t yet. Probably not enough demand. There have been rumors that one is coming.

how does the HD XL model compare to the series 3? (other than the obvious, of hard drive space)

I’m finally biting the bullet and jumping into the HD world, new tv and tivo…should I get an HD XML unit, or a Series 3 and a 1TB hard drive upgrade? I want the THX certification aspect, and the large storage (hene the hard drive upgrade if I buy a series 3), but I don’t know how nice the OLED display on the series 3 is?

also, I’ve heard some stories about how the Series 3 has some known issues, cauing them to fail and need repair/replace…some folks have had good luck, others are on their 3rd or 4th one…is an HD XL gonna be a safer bet, from a future possible failure standpoint?

thanks in advance for any info/advice!

I wouldn’t get the Series3 at this point, it was discontinued early in the year and all that is being sold now is existing stock. Functionally the S3 gives you the OLED front panel and the ability to use an eSATA drive. But it doesn’t support multi-stream so you’ll need two CableCARDs. The TiVo HD XL can use one M-Card, it has a 1TB drive, and you don’t get the OLED front panel. And it can only use the official expansion drive. Same remote, same software.

Internally the TiVo HD XL is newer hardware – one chip for the major functions while the S3 uses an add-on H.264/VC-1 chip. It should provide the same functionality, but I suppose it is possible at some point that the S3 runs into some limitation.
