Good point on the ATSC. Their data sheets say UHF, channels 14-69. So they’re pretty specific, which means it probably isn’t an over-sight. I don’t know why they would exclude VHF, since dual-frequency tuner blocks are common.

The UHF-only limit for ATSC is significant. There may not be many VHF digital OTA channels today (though there certainly are some), but after shutdown next year, MOST OTA channels will be relocating down to VHF frequencies — usually identical to their original analog freqs, but not necessarily. UHF (especially high UHF) is the portion of the spectrum being freed up for re-allocation. So…unless they change that, I wouldn’t count on the OTA recording function much.

I think the hardware is real, but there is a lot more to launching the product. They don’t have any content deals in place, and that’s the key right there. They also wouldn’t talk about which satellite they were using, just that it was an existing bird.

*If* they can launch what they’re promising it will be pretty impressive. But that does seem like a big if. They’ve done a lot of work developing the box, so I’m hoping they pull the rest together.

As much as I’d love to see this product make it to market, it seems to good to be true. If it does make it, I’ll be the first to sign up.
