Shomi Technologies has developed a signal processing solution to reduce video bandwidth requirements 20% to 70% on top of whats gained when using MPEG-4 encoding, etc without any additional loss. Technology is available for license and can easily be integrated into these types of products.

Here is another way to solve the bandwidth squeeze:<br

And that includes nearly all HDTVs with integrated tuners sold to date. They'd have to switch to using an external receiver.I'm not sure what you mean about 720p channels. This has nothing to do with the resolution of the channel. Digital cable channels can be 480i, 480p, 720p, or 1080i already - and TiVo handles all of them. What do you mean 'SD cable'? That means 'Standard Definition', as in SD vs. HD. I think you mean SDV - Switched Digital Video. Using 'SD' is confusing since no one uses that for SDV.The whole CableCARD and SDV issue is very complex. CableCARD itself is compatible with SDV. But it depends on the capabilities of the host device, not the card, and uni-directional hosts like TiVo cannot handle SDV. That's not he cable company's fault, and they don't have any responsibility to make it work. However, there is a solution coming which will allow uni-directional devices, like TiVo, handle SDV. It is called a Tuning Resolver, read about it here. And there are a number of other posts with more information on the situation.

If cable goes to MPEG-4 than any device without an MPEG-4 decoder will be unable to use those channels, period. I understand that my tivo will work to record the normal channels but the 720p channels will be decoded also? there are no hd inputs on the hd tivo.... how is the tivo going to change the signal once my cable company switches to all SD cable/gets rid of the cablecard? are they still required by law to provide cablecards to decode their signal once they switch to SDV/the cablecard won't work (to my knowledge) once the switch is made? what can tivo come up with that will allow the hd channels to be input?

so the hd tivo users will be able to use their tivos to record…. but what about the HDTV owners?
