Letter From the Editor

Here’s a little music to your lovely ears: Now you can think of your favorite song (and I do mean virtually any song) and play it with your favorite remote control. That’s right: Imagine 4 million + tracks at your fingertips—build your own personal library, adding any song you like with a click of your TiVo remote so you can play it back whenever you want to.

That, my friend, is Rhapsody on TiVo—the latest knock-your-socks-off TiVo feature, bound to get you singin’ its praises in one TiVo “bloop.” That means you can now get Gwen in your living room; serve up Cake from your couch; or channel a Nightingale whenever you’re “Jonesin” (if you catch my groove). I’m not even going to try to explain the New Music releases you get every week, the amazing Rhapsody Artist Channels or the access to personal playlists, ratings and more… whew!

You’ll have to just see it yourself.

Remember, since this all sounds too good to be true, there’s this little number: your FREE 30-day trial. Better still, no sign up or credit card is required; all you need is your TiVo remote. Once your 30 days are up, it expires automatically. Or you can continue enjoying the Rhapsody service (both online and on TiVo) for less than the cost of one CD a month. As soon as the music gets going, I think you’ll realize this is a very sound offer indeed.

Now… I’ll tell you my favorite song if you tell me yours.
Shanan

P.S. ConfidEntial to my enthuSiAstic TiVo Series 3 and TiVo HD subscribers (And you know who you are): Keep an eye on your Inbox for a special announcement (or two, ahem) over the next couple of weeks.

TiVo Tip: What do you want… Blood?

Now, with new and improved WishList® searches, you’ll get exactly what you ask for!

You already know WishList is my all-time favorite TiVo feature (er, so it’s tied with Swivel Search), but now those TiVo engineers have really outdone themselves with the ability to get specific about our TV wishes: By creating multiple search terms, like two actors, several keywords, etc., and putting conditions on them (this and that, this or that, this but never that), that TiVo Genie in our DVR will know precisely how to please. Let me explain… and since Halloween is upon us, I’m sinking my teeth right on in:

Let’s say you’ve seen every last Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but are a sucker for every episode with Faith and wouldn’t mind a surprise visit from Eliza Dushku (the actress who plays Faith) on your Now Playing List. From TiVo Central > Find Programs > WishList Search, then Create New WishList Search, then:

  • Highlight Title and enter BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, then select “Done entering title keyword.”
  • Next, use the Arrow keys to select Actor and enter: DUSHKU, ELIZA.
  • When you see her name, highlight it and press SELECT.
  • Now your WishList search will faithfully record every Buffy episode with Eliza.

Easy enough. Now let’s get our negative on. Maybe you want the classic Psycho, but not the color re-make with Anne Heche.

Create a new WishList like above example, but exclude the movie with Anne by highlighting her name and pressing the Thumbs button (Up or Down) on your remote. A minus sign added to the Actor’s name means that this term is excluded. Press the LEFT arrow when you’re done.

You can customize even more. Press the thumbs button twice to make a term optional. Press it again to make the term required.

This may all sound overwhelming at first, but I promise, once you get in there and try it yourself, you’ll see how you can suck the marrow right out of your cable lineup. Think of the possibilities: Maybe you like Jennifer Aniston but have had enough of her Friends. Or perhaps you love chocolate and strawberries but have an allergic reaction just seeing shrimp on your screen: Narrow your Category/Cooking WishList search by entering your favorite foods as inclusive Keywords, and excluding the ones you can’t stand.

As Mikey’s big brother would say: Try it, you’ll like it!

More Halloween TV Treats (Good for your teeth, too!)

Is that a great pumpkin on your Now Playing List? If you’re sweet on Halloween, there are plenty of great programming possibilities to keep you in the spirit until October 31st. Here are just a few:

For kids:
Goosebumps. Based on R.L. Stines best-selling book series, a Goosebumps marathon will air Saturday, Oct. 27 @ 10 AM. — Sunday, Oct. 28 @ 8 PM.

For kids disguised as adults:
America’s Scariest Halloween Attractions. The biggest and best Halloween attractions. Fri 10/19 8:00 PM on the Travel Channel.

Unwrapped. Get your fill of Halloween sweets and treats, airing Sat. 10/20 @ 9:00 PM on the FOOD Channel.

Saturday Night Live. A compilation of Halloween sketches throughout the show’s 20 seasons airs on E!, Sun 10/21 @ 1:00 AM.

Bonus Tip: Are you more into the shows that go bump on your DVR in the middle of the night? Then scare up your own creepy selections with a keyword or category WishList search. Try MONSTER, WEREWOLF, ZOMBIE, HALLOWEEN, NIGHTMARE, etc. Or Category Movies, Sub-category: Horror.

TiVo Fan Mail

Speaking of Home Movie Sharing, Dave S. from San Francisco, CA shared his gratitude for his favorite feature and the ginormous prize package he won as a result of entering the “My TiVo Gets Me” Contest. Watch his winning video entry.

I have already been contacted by the “prize fulfillment” company regarding the dispensation of my winnings. The wheels are in motion, and I am very much looking forward to receiving my new HDTV, Dave S.TiVo Series3 (with Product Lifetime service, sweet!), wireless adapter, and check for $2,000. What an incredible and generous prize! Thank you so very much! I’ve never owned an HDTV before, but I am a huge movie buff and have always wanted one—and of course there’s no point in even owning a TV unless you have a kick-ass TiVo to go with it! I know it sounds corny, but winning this contest really is a dream come true for me. I can’t wait to watch my own home movies on the big screen, and all my Hollywood faves, not to mention the great HD programming that will soon be filling my TiVo’s ample hard drive. Plus, this fall I get to take a vacation, thanks to you: I’m going to Hawaii! I’ve never been there, but I’ve always wanted to go—another dream come true, courtesy of TiVo!

My point is this: THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Best regards,
Dave S.
