Ah, the Zap2it service is new!

So last night when I posted about the ability to schedule TiVo recordings from Zap2it.com it wasn’t something I’d just missed before – but actually a new service. They issued a press release today touting it – see below:

Zap2it Helps Consumers Watch TV When and Where They Want

New Features Give Users Control of Their Favorite TV Shows

CHICAGO, Sept. 13 /PRNewswire/ — Zap2it today announced the addition of two new site features that allow users to watch their favorite shows where they want, when they want. As networks make popular shows available on their own websites, and as viewers embrace technologies that free them from traditional TV schedules, Zap2it is evolving to provide comprehensive programming information and useful functionality to its audience of high-volume TV viewers.

The “On Broadband” feature available at http://video.zap2it.com/ provides easy navigation to full episodes of primetime TV shows available for streaming over the Internet. The guide focuses on free offerings from the five largest broadcast networks plus the TNT and TBS cable networks.

In addition to program links, the On Broadband guide provides Zap2it users with show- and episode-level descriptions, original air dates, episode numbers and photos, when available. The service is powered by the industry-leading TV database provided by Tribune Media Services’ (TMS) Entertainment Products division.

Additionally, TiVo’s Online Scheduling feature is now available to Zap2it’s passionate TV-viewing audience. Users with broadband-enabled TiVo(R) DVRs can remotely schedule recordings of their favorite shows from within the Zap2it TV listings grids. This new offering gives Zap2it users control over their TiVo boxes from any computer connected to the Internet.

This marks the latest development in a long-standing partnership between TMS and TiVo. TiVo has chosen TMS entertainment data to power its popular digital video recorders (DVRs) since their launch in 1998. Recently, the two organizations extended and expanded their entertainment data agreement to include new TMS offerings including movie and celebrity databases and entertainment news. Under the new agreement, TMS will continue to develop entertainment solutions for next-generation TiVo products and services.

“Zap2it users have always been selective in what they watch on TV. With the introduction of our On Broadband guide and the TiVo Online Scheduling feature, they’re now in control of where and when they watch,” said Rebecca Baldwin, Zap2it’s General Manager.

The movie and celeb databases are could already be part of Swivel Search, but ‘entertainment news’ bit sounds like something we haven’t seen before, wondering what they’re planning to do with it.
