Update to TiVo Desktop

An email I just received from TiVo:

Recently, a security vulnerability affecting TiVo Desktop for Windows was brought to our attention. The reported vulnerability has been fixed in version 1.3 of the application, which is now available for download.If you have TiVo Desktop for Windows installed on your PC, please go to http://www.tivo.com/desktop/ to download version 1.3 of the TiVo Desktop for Windows application as soon as possible. If you do not have TiVo Desktop for Windows installed on your PC, you do not need to take any action at this time.

Description
A vulnerability with Microsoft’s gdiplus.dll file installed with TiVo Desktop for Windows has been identified. This vulnerability may allow arbitrary code execution if an infected JPG file is previewed in the TiVo Desktop for Windows application.

Recommended Action
All TiVo Desktop for Windows users should upgrade to the latest version of TiVo Desktop for Windows, which contains an updated version of Microsoft’s gdiplus.dll file.

So, from time to time I check out the job postings at TiVo – and sigh wistfully, wishing I worked there. But the more upbeat aspect is looking at what they’re hiring for, and then pondering what the hell they’re up to. :-)

For people who missed ‘Lost’ in the SF Bay Area

“Last Wednesday’s (Oct. 13th) episode of “Lost” is being re-broadcast this Saturday, Oct. 23 at 8 p.m. PDT. This week’s episode of “Lost,” which airs in its normal time slot on Oct. 20 at 8 p.m., will be repeated this Saturday, Oct. 23 at 9 p.m.Note to TiVo users:
Be aware that your TiVo listings may not be correct due to the last-minute change by ABC so please plan accordingly.

“Lost” aired on Wednesday, 10/13/04, in its regular timeslot at 8:00PM. The change to the schedule occurred after the deadlines of some TV listings services. We apologize for any inconvenience.

TiVoToGo shown to the public

TiVo was showing off TTG at the DigitalLife Expo and Engadget got photos and info.

Though I think they’re being overly pessimistic about the copying controls. TiVo also allows blocking of burning DVDs on their integrated units, it has been in there since they shipped, and I’ve never heard of a single use of the system. ReplayTV also provided mechanisms for content providers to block their show sharing, and it was never invoked.
