Voom’s coming TiVo competition

Watch the demo video.

I have to say, it looks pretty good. 2 HDTV satellite tuners and 2 OTA HDTV tuners in their DVR box – like the HDTV DirecTiVo. With ‘thin clients’ you can distribute content around the home on an IP network.

Also music and photo support like TiVo has. And their music support actually looks a little better with ID3 sorting support. They also support music and photos simultaneously. UCentric is providing the platform.

With the USB2.0 support and higher speed connections TiVo is finally able to support streaming, so they could do the same kind of thin client. I think they’ll have to eventually, Moxi/Digeo has promoted the same kind of feature.

the lack of networking and USB functionality is the only thing i dislike about our direcTV tivos. i’m hoping direcTV will get a clue and at least enable the USB ports in the future, but i rather doubt they will.

Maybe if other vendors, like Voom, start offering these features DTV will be pressured into doing so to stay competetive.
