Letter from the Editor

Have you checked out “Legend Behind the Lens” yet? You must. Really.
(If you have a TiVo® Series2™ box connected to your home network, just
select “Music &
Photos” from TiVo Central, then “Nikon: Legends Behind the Lens.” Select an image, then “Play slide show,” then sit back and enjoy.)

For me, last month’s monkeys were irresistible, but now, NikonNet invokes the essence of
the Olympic experience with award-winning photographer
Dave Black. Dave’s a pro shooter who’s been photographing professional and
world-class athletes for over two decades, including each Summer and Winter Olympic Games since 1984. Be a sport and take a peek.

Ring Around the World
Yes, we’ve come full circle: At the dawn of the 3rd millennium, the Olympic
Games are returning to the country of their birth – Athens, Greece. (Records show that the ancient Olympic
Games were held in Greece as early as in 776 BC, but the first Modern Olympic Games were held in 1896.)
The 2004 Olympic Games will be held from 13 to 29 August 2004, including 28 sports at 35 venues over a
period of 16 days. The five Olympic rings on the flag represent the idea of the
universality of the Olympic
Movement. At least one of the colors of the rings, including the white background, can be found on the flag of every nation in the world.

Recommend It!
“Think My So-Called Life
meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Six Feet Under,” explains Kristin M. from San Francisco, CA. “Dead Like Me is the
perfect blend of dark comedy and coming-of-age angst that somehow manages to transform a trite sentiment (enjoy life while you can!) into compelling
entertainment with irreverent dialogue, quirky characters and unique storylines. I’m completely hooked.”
Dead Like Me, which airs on Showtime, focuses on George Lass
played by Ellen Muth, who at the age of 18 gets killed by a
de-orbiting toilet seat (yes, you read that right) from space on her first day of corporate employment-during her lunch break,
no less. Turns out, though, she’s not dead, but ‘undead’ and recruited to be a grim reaper in the “Accidental Deaths
Division,” preparing people for the afterlife by taking their souls. The reapers’ supervisor is played by Mandy
Patinkin (also known as Inigo Montoya to us Princess Bride junkies), who hands out assignments to his team members on yellow post-it notes.

The second season of Dead Like Me premieres on July 25 at 10
PM. Kristin insists you haven’t lived until
you’ve at least taken a peek at Dead Like Me, so schedule a recording today.

TiVo® Tip: WishList™, A Very Good Sport
Get your game on and use a WishListâ„¢ search to
gear up for the summer’s hottest sports.
Try entering “OLYMPICS” (or even “OLYMPIC*” – use the SLOW button to enter the * wildcard.) as a keyword search and use
“View upcoming episodes” to see what coming up in the world of preliminary specials or too-sentimental-to-pass-up
retrospectives. Or if the thought of Athens inspires, enter “GREECE” as a keyword and use “Interests” as a category,
“Travel” as a sub-category. Or try “Cooking” as a sub-category and prepare the local cuisine. Just be sure to send me some spanikopita.

More Olympic Tips
Sometimes it’s good to be a spectator. Here are a few winning tips and tricks from fellow
TiVo subscribers to ensure you always catch the best of Athens.

  • For best results, always record sporting events in Best or High quality.
  • Consider recording the Games in 2-hour blocks (traditionally, broadcasters air Olympic coverage in
two- four- or six-hour blocks) so you can delete as you go and make space for future recordings; use
    manual recordings by time.
  • Remember, the guide data for live events like the Olympics are not always accurate; they publish
planned events when possible, including the keywords of sporting events, but last-minute decisions/changes
by the broadcaster are inevitable. Be prepared. Check the comprehensive NBCOlympics.com TV Viewing Interactive Guide regularly (available in early August) for the latest updates.
  • Don’t forget: If you’re at work at the time you learn when NBC will be airing the events you want to watch, go to TiVo Central Online and schedule a recording for your broadband-connected TiVo Series2 DVR.
That way, as Alan says, “I won’t have to stop at home after work to set up the recording; I’ll be able to go straight
to dinner or the golf course with no worries about missing the best of Athens.”
  • Create a WishList search for your favorite athletes and sports stars to catch them on your
favorite talk shows (via satellite during the Games, or after their homecoming), and be on the ball
to add new ones to your list. “You know new US stars will be created. It happens every Olympics,” says subscriber Ashu.
  • Brad from Seattle had this excellent suggestion: “If you receive a Canadian station, record the
coverage there, too. U.S. broadcasters tend to focus solely on American athletes, whereas the Canadian stations tend to show more athletes from
    around the globe.”
  • Want fun for the whole family? Use the PAUSE button and bet
a quarter on how far she’ll jump, what weight he’ll lift, etc.
  • And last but not least… Wishing you had more recording space? Buy a second TiVo box!

You Ask, We Answer
Q. I’ve been playing around with the new Home
Media features and really enjoy them,
especially Digital Music (I listen to more music now than ever!). I was wondering if there are any other software tools
besides the TiVo Desktop application that I should be using to organize the digital files on my computer.
A. Indeed. We’ve partnered with the best in digital music, photos and more to offer you specials on new products and services
that will enhance your experience with Home Media features.

Since you mentioned Digital Music in particular, you may want to start with MoodLogic. MoodLogic
automatically catalogs the music on your PC into easy-to-understand categories. Then you can use
the TiVo service to navigate and play music by your favorite artists, from a specific genre, or even create mixes that fit your current mood, tempo or era.

One of the coolest features of MoodLogic is the award-winning SmartMixâ„¢, which automatically
compiles a playlist based on your mood. Using your TiVo remote,
just select a song, artist or genre,
followed by the SmartMixâ„¢ choice and MoodLogic will scan your collection to mix and match the most
compatible songs. So if you (channeling Leo Sayer now…) feel like dancin’ (reprise: gonna dance the night
away), choose wisely and one touch on your remote will build a playlist of similar-sounding booty-shaking beats.
Or you can control the mood of the Mix with a genre or artist-based SmartMix. Choose “Get Up” for a joyful playlist or “Blue” if you’re feeling
marvelously maudlin.

MoodLogic has invited all TiVo subscribers to download the software for a free 14-day trial. If you like it, you can sign up and activate
songs with the MoodLogic Service for a year. Let me know what you think.

Remember, you can get help with most of your technical questions by visiting our support website or by sending an e-mail to the TiVo e-mail team. Or find
answers and share know-how in
these web-based help forums. For account-related issues, you must use Manage My Account or give us a call.

I Can Name that Fast-Forward in…
Those TiVocabularyâ„¢ submissions inspire the strangest responses. Never mind the correct spelling of
its onomatopoeia, apparently the sound of the TiVo service in fast-forward has roused a sing-a-long or two.
“We believe that it sounds like the first four notes of the children’s tune ‘Pop Goes the Weasel,’”
says Glen C. from Georgia. “Upon hearing the 2X tones, even our
house guests fill in the blanks and
sing the rest of the tune. It sounds like ‘Da DUM Da DUM da DUDDY da dum… ‘ Picture a child turning
the crank on a jack-in-the-box toy and you’ll see what I mean. ” Angela and Tim from Chicago had the
same epiphany and ever since Angela explains, “a dramatic increase in humming has occurred during TiVo time.”
