News You Can Use From TiVo, Volume 51

TiVo Subscriber Newsletter | Volume 51
Letter from the Editor

I L-O-V-E my job, especially when I get to break great news like this: Starting immediately, every TiVo® service subscriber with
two or more TiVo® boxes in the home pays a lower service fee on each additional box. So, instead of paying $12.95 on every box in your home, you’ll pay a discounted monthly fee of just $6.95 for each additional box—up to
five additional boxes! If you already have two or more boxes with monthly subscription, expect to see the lower fee (we’re calling it Multi-Service Discount) on your next billing cycle. (Yay! And you thought we didn’t read your e-mails…)

But that’s just one of several great-news pieces. To get the full scoop (and put this newsletter gal’s name to a face), look for a new menu item titled “You Asked. You Got It!” on TiVo Central soon.

Counting on even more great news,
Shanan

P.S. For those of you now ready to get a second, third, etc. box: Buy today and you’ll save an additional 10% off a 40- or 80-hour TiVo box. But hurry, offer ends June 30,2004.

4 More Reasons to Get Connected!
TiVo just enhanced your service by adding four new features (formerly bundled as a package called Home Media Option) — all
included for your existing monthly fee of just $12.95! Connect your TiVo® Series2™ DVR to your home network to get even more of the entertainment you care about, not just TV, but music, photos and more, with a
Digital Music Player, a Digital Photo Viewer, and Multi-Room Viewing. Plus, with TiVo® Online Scheduling, you’ll be able to schedule recordings from the web with as little as one
hour before airtime (if you connect to the TiVo® service using broadband). What’s more? We’ve partnered with Best Buy and Nikon so every connected Series2â„¢ subscriber can access new digital music and images anytime. Hear new musical releases from today’s most popular artists, brought to you by Best Buy. Nikon, meanwhile, will feature the work of a new photographer every month in “Legend Behind the Lens.” Today, you’ll find more than 60 riveting images from award-winning photographer Joe McNally. Just select “Music & Photos” from TiVo Central and go from there. (Editor’s note: I got a preview of Nikon’s “Legend Behind the Lens.” You won’t want to miss it. Choose to view it as a slideshow and enjoy!)
Nothing Lost in Translation
Subscriber Steve Gerber wrote in to share this small-world story about Online Scheduling with the TiVo® service: “For Christmas, I bought my father a TiVo® box. Not long after, I was traveling on business in Tokyo when I received the following email:

Hi from Kings Pool Camp in Botswana. Please program TiVo to record the Today Show on NBC on January 26. Matt Lauer is going to broadcast from Vumbura, our last camp. Miss you guys. Love, Mom and Dad.

“Amazingly, the email was initiated from a very low-speed radio link in the African bush, and passed on to the intranet at the other end of the radio link,” Steve explains. “I received it in Tokyo, immediately pulled up tivo.com, and successfully programmed my father’s TiVo® box
in South Carolina. What a great feature! One of their colleagues from the trip was so taken by the ability to program their TiVo from one of the remotest places on earth, that he bought one, too.”

Got an amazing TiVo tale of your own to tell? I’m all ears.

Recommend It!
“Watching CBS News Sunday Morning
with TiVo is like flipping through your favorite magazine and eating blueberry muffins in bed, only better—no crumbs,” says Sara Hunter. “From Charles Osgoods’ gentle, literate delivery of the headlines to the offbeat tales
of small-town America, this is the most intelligent, smile-producing ninety minutes on TV. Where else could I have learned about the World Pumpkin Heaving championships or seen octogenarian Vladimir Horowitz’s triumphant return to Moscow after decades of exile?” “Try it,” says Sarah. “You’ll love it!”
CBS News Sunday Morning, Sarah adds, also has a knack for picking out new musical talent well ahead of the popularity curve. So much so that
Sarah was able to enjoy Norah Jones at a local bookstore before she got big.
Search your TV listings now for CBS News Sunday Morning via TiVo Central Online, schedule a recording and maybe U2 will get lucky.

Got an opinion on great TV? Recommend it to your fellow subscribers with a compelling pitch that includes a few reasons why the show is a standout. We’ll feature a new recommendation every newsletter.

TiVo® Tip: Tricking PLAY
It’s that time of year… Whether you’re planning to
conquer Mt. Rainier or Splash Mountain, be sure to review your To Do List (TiVo
Central > Pick Programs To Record > To Do List) before you leave your TiVo® box for an extended period of time. Delete any recordings you can live without so you don’t inadvertently bump a must-see show with the daily news or a program that airs several times a week. It’s the easiest way to ensure all of your favorite shows will be ready-and-waiting upon your return. (Shortcut: To jump instantly to the To Do List, press the TiVo button followed by the number 2: Just think 2 for “To Do”!)

You Ask, We Answer
Q. I recently noticed a new “Music &
Photos” item on my TiVo Central menu. What’s it for? —Rayanne in IL
A. “Music & Photos” is a new menu item on TiVo Central that represents a host of exciting new entertainment possibilities (formerly bundled as a package called Home Media Option) for all subscribers with a Series2â„¢ box. To bring it all to life, just connect your Series2â„¢ DVR to your home network using a USB network adapter. For details on connecting your box to your home network, go here.

Once you’re connected, you’ll be able to:

  • stream digital music saved on your computer through your home entertainment system, or view digital photos on your TV screen
  • schedule programs from TiVo Central Online up to an hour before airtime (handy when you’re stuck at the office)
  • use the Multi-Room Viewing Feature to transfer programs between Series2â„¢ boxes in your home, so you can record in the living room and watch in the bedroom, or vice versa

Want to learn more about these new features? To get the complete low-down on Online Scheduling, Digital Music, Digital Photos and Multi-Room Viewing, start by reviewing the Home Media Features Guide. You can view it online or

Evidence of More Reality TV?
TV producer and former attorney David E. Kelley (The Practice, Ally McBeal) has bowed to the popularity of “reality” television by developing a drama with real lawyers, reports Daily Variety. Kelley, serving as a consulting producer, will create a law firm whose members will try real civil cases through binding arbitration overseen by current or former judges. Lawyers will be fired along the way, leaving an eventual winner. NBC has ordered eight episodes of the as-yet-untitled project. “In success we should be as enlightening as we are entertaining,” Kelley said. “In failure, we’ll stink.” Hmmm… I’d dare argue that raising the bar of reality TV is a moot point, but I’ll let YOU be the judge of that. Kids’ Corner
Keep sending in great stories on how the TiVo® service has made a positive impact on your children’s lives and we’ll make “Kids’
Corner” a permanent section in the TiVo Newsletter. “TiVo has helped my four-year-old daughter’s drawing skills!” writes Angela E. “As she watches Blue’s Clues, she pauses the program to draw each clue as it’s drawn on the TV screen. In just a month, she has progressed from a few scribbles to very complex drawings—all because she knows how to use the TiVo remote.”

TiVocabularyâ„¢ Submissions
I was bemused and amused by the masses of inspired submissions for TiVo lingo (who knew?) that followed the last Newsletter. Leah from San Diego, for example, shared this suggestion for new vernacular: “I have a first-generation TiVo box and LOVE IT!” Leah explains. “My friend
Kurt has a DVR from his cable provider. Due to my frustration with this inferior product, I started calling it “Fako,” as it is Fake TiVo. Now all my
friends refer to Kurt’s machine as ‘Fako,’ but he can’t get rid of it because of his contract. We all suffer but I appreciate TiVo all the more every time I come home to it.” And hence, Leah’s TiVocabulary submission:

Fako (fak•o) n., 1. a badly engineered imitation of the original digital video recorder, TiVo®, 2. a generic DVR product that just doesn’t measure up when compared to the amazing, one-and-only, easy-to-use TiVo® service.

Love it, Leah. Stay tuned for your next TiVocabulary lesson, next issue.
